My newly purchased OM-5 arrived this past Wednesday, April 3. I was able to find time for two neighborhood walks yesterday and today to try out the camera. Much to my surprise, on each occasion, the camera frequently shut down after taking a photo. Yesterday it happened about 6 times and today at least 10 times. It occurs randomly. I have to move the on-off lever to off and then move it on again to get it ready for the next exposure. Moreover, it turns out that several photos were never recorded after taking them.

I also noticed that mounting the lens (ED 12-45mm f4 PRO) seemed especially tight and difficult to move into position for the click of the pin to be heard. I never encountered this mounting difficulty with any of the several different cameras and lenses I have owned over the years.

Before calling B&H to request a replacement of the camera and lens, I would like to know if others have encountered these problems. Are the shut downs and the lens mounting difficulties common with the OM-5?

In all other respects, I really like the camera and lens. I am hoping that this an exceptional case and that a camera and lens replacement will be satisfactory.

The 12-45mm that came as a kit with my OM5 is quite stiff to mount. My other MFT lenses are fine on the OM5. A trace of sebum helped.

Not had a blackout.

Does the battery display show 100% charge?

Have you tried a different SD card, formatted in camera?

Only things I can think of with a new camera, and not acceptable.

Good luck!

Rick

What SD card? The most common thing causing Olympus/OMD camera blackouts/shut downs is a problem trying to write to the SD card. Try a different card from a different manufacturer if possible before returning the camera.

An SD card problem would be my bet. Try a different card and see if the problem persists.

I had this problem; it was caused by a low battery.

Does the problem still occur with a freshly-charged battery?

Thank you the sebum tip. Mounting the lens is now like all others -- easy!

The shut down/blackout problem has been solved. It was related to the post exposure review setting. I reported this problem in a separate forum message where I was unable to get the 5 second review to perform. A reader of the message suggested that I make sure that I press the OK button after setting the timer. That fix somehow was related to the blackouts as that problem also disappeared. All is well with my new OM-5. No need to return it to B&H for a replacement.

Glad you got it solved. A while ago another user posted a similar problem (can't find the post quickly enough to link). Raises the question if the problem returns when preview is set back to off, or that it was a one-time problem wherein the camera got confused.

Good luck!
