This weekly topic serves as a place for forum members to share recent work with our Nikon Z cameras. It's OK for Z owners to dazzle us with images made with other cameras, but the idea is to allow owners with similar cameras to compare notes, chops, and sensibilities.

Using Threaded View helps to keep each person's contribution and responses linked in a tree-like structure so replies/discussions are easier to follow.

To begin:
  1. Add your contribution for the week by responding to this, the first message in this topic.
  2. Change the Subject of your message, then embed your image into the reply with whatever you’d like to say about it. (Embedding makes it easier to participate, easier than a link to an image located outside the forum - but links aren’t a great offense).
  3. In order to make things easier for our cellphone users, please limit the number of images in one post to fewer than 10, and don't quote images in your replies that are extraneous to the points you're making.
If you especially want C&C (criticism/critique) or technique feedback, say so. It’s assumed one does want such feedback, but direct requests may garner a more studied analysis/response. If you don't want such feedback, say so, and others will respect your wishes.

If you feel you've been ignored, select your post, reply to it with a brief note to the effect of "Can I get some feedback?". Not getting feedback on a post isn't uncommon, so don't feel offended - no one is charged to ensure all posts get attention (we're not organized enough for that). If you want particular feedback (composition, exposure choice, etc.), saying so can be helpful for the potential respondents as to what your needs may be.

It is courteous and advisable that, should you post images for feedback, you also make comment on at least one other contribution. Respectful acknowledgment of everyone is the goal, and it’s requested that all participants assume some responsibility to that end.

After a month away at work , my first day back shooting a couple of days ago. Thought I would go out and try something easy with my Z6II , BIF lol. Managed to get some nice shots despite the weather not being to great.

I also tried the 1.4TC for the first time with my 400mm 4.5.

Had a nice grey Heron flying around a local spot so grabbed a few snaps.

I go to the zoo often just to walk up and down the hills as well as doing some photography and watch people. This week I took my new Viltrox 20mm f/2.8 lens. Not what most folks would consider a zoo lens, but then I often photograph subjects at the zoo other than animals, and I often just pick a lens when I am going somewhere to see what I might do with it.

This is also part of an exercise that I was first introduced to in a high school photography course 43 years ago. It is more cost effective to do than back in the film days. Thom Hogan recently posted about a similar exercise here

https://bythom.com/newsviews/the-random-game.html

I like this inexpensive Viltrox lens. No, its not going to give results like the Nikon Z 20mm lens and I wouldn't expect it to. If you understand its limitations, which have been covered in reviews of both the Sony and Nikon mount versions it can be useful. I still haven't used it yet for the purpose for which I acquired it, which is angling related photography. I like using this lens as it makes for a small an lightweight combo with the Z5/6/7 family. Still the 14-30 will remain my primary wide angle option.

Anyway, some shots with a wide angle lens from the zoo.

Images from .NEF processed with NX Studio and Affinity Photo.

If cameras and lenses can have autofocus then why can't I?

Taken on a foggy day. Rain earlier that day left a layer of water on the ice of the still frozen pond. Z6, 24-120mm @120mm/F8. Processed in Capture One.

Got out to a spot been meaning to check out for a while. Ended up with way too many shots to go through in just an hour of shooting. Here's one of the first that was worth keeping.

Just invested in a Tamron 150-500 to give me some "proper" tele range and been testing it locally on some subjects.

It's my first ever tele lens that goes past 300 mm and so far I've concluded it definitely takes some getting used to and I need more training with lenses this long.

The lens seems quite good for the price though (all snapped on Z6ii):

500 mm - f7.1 - 1/640 - ISO 220
500 mm - f7.1 - 1/640 - ISO 220

500 mm - f7.1 - 1/640 - ISO 4500
500 mm - f7.1 - 1/640 - ISO 4500

500 mm - f7.1 - 1/640 - ISO 5000
500 mm - f7.1 - 1/640 - ISO 5000

457 mm - f8 - 1/800 - ISO6400
457 mm - f8 - 1/800 - ISO6400

All images processed from .NEF in Lightroom (on phone, so just a bit of basic NR). The sparrow have been recovered from deep underexposure of the subject, the rest have also been pushed a bit, due to bad light and overcast weather.

So far this lens seems quite good - only thing I've found during my brief testing is normal VR is quite nauseating, as it sort of jumps around in steps. Sport mode makes it much less jerking and more usable.

Thought this was a fun one too; no processing; just cropped. This is a reason the Plena is a pleasure.

These seem nice at first glance. I’m looking at them on my iPhone.
Steve Perry has some very good videos on techniques for sighting birds in flight. They are valid for things moving slow and not moving at all too.
