Fuji X100 VI - Talk me out of buying one, please 🙏

Haha cheers Rob,

Yes didn't think of the adapter and filter needed for weather sealing, that said I may not have bothered with that, but maybe I would have.

Thanks Allen, its nothing about being worried about losing it or damaging it on a trip ore travelling, I too have traveled with a lot of gear and never worry, always careful, but I use my equipment a lot and conditions never stop me taking a photo.

I put it down to a size thing really, the Q is big enough that its something to think about, is the best way to put it.

Going to a restaurant, do I want it getting in the way. Hiking, I'll need a bag for it. Taking it to a friends gathering, bit full on

Thanks JRK,

I am fortunate to have the Q3 yes, i think the more I read on here the less likely I am to go through with the X100, I think that in those times that I don’t find a larger camera appropriate to take, the X100 probably won’t change much. Maybe I’ll consider an older X100 or Gr or RX. So may yet so few options that are just right

Yeah, I certainly get that. I was in SE Asia for two months recently and had my Sony gear with me the whole time and it does become a pain at times which is why I now only bring select lenses with me and I no longer use camera backpacks, they're just too bulky and limiting. I use regular backpacks (Osprey, Gregory or Mystery Ranch) with good waist and back support then use a camera cube. At 65 I had to make some adjustments since we walk a lot when we travel and I've found this to be the best for long days out and about.

If I had only a Q3 with me I'd feel like i was missing something on long trips which is why I liked the X100V (soon to be VI) for travel along with my a7rv. I loved the X100 for around town street photography, but when I need more flexibility and fast AF I grab the a7rv w/24-70mm 2.8 . These two together make for a nice, reasonable size, versatile travel package for me.

Still have my eye on that Q3, but I'd probably never travel with it unless it was just short trips within the US.

1. I am sure you can work out that a small camera gets in the way less than a larger one, right?

2. What does it have to do with affording something. I value other opinions as I don’t have all the answers and ideas myself. If you don’t value opinions a forum might not be the place for you 😘

  • Is there really enough size difference vs the Q3 to make a significant difference in the 'take anywhere' objective?
  • Should I be looking for something truly pocketable? RX100 / Canon equiv?
  • I have a fear that I will get the X100 VI and realise that in practical terms its no easier to take, its essentially still a camera that needs a strap or bag.
What are your opinions?
Not a lot of different in size between Q3 and the X100 series. Maybe more a weight difference, but that isn't much either.

Look for more portable? Well, that is subjective. Maybe a Ricoh GRIII or GRIIIX. Smaller, more pocketable. Maybe not as good of a total tool however. All I can say is I have the X100VI now, and I have none of the others mentioned, and the other cameras are Nikon FF, way bigger, heavier, but interchangeable.

The X100VI probably isn't that much easier to take around, and I use a strap of some sort on mine, however a few of these slim body cameras with no real finger grip are hard to just hold while wandering.

I owned an X100F, that was the last one I had, I see the VI is larger, by a tiny amount.
My situation is almost the same as yours! I originally bought the x100F and loved it, as I called it my "bar camera", because it was easy to take pictures in social situations even rowdy ones. But upon sober reflection, I was often a little disappointed in the limitations of the lens at times, the sharpness of it at different settings.

So, I got a Leica Q and eventually a Q2M, and now I just own the Q. But like you said, I also think it is not that "compact" (whatever that means to you). For compact, I own a Ricoh GR III and an old Pentax MX-1. The Leica Q is just in class all its own. Unlike the x100F when I had it, I am happy with all the limitations of the Q (24 Mp, fixed 28mm, iffy high ISO performance, non-weatherproofing). I could not say that about the x100F, the limitations grated on me so I sold it.

Once with the Q, it is hard for me to go back to the x100. I think everything that you didn't like about the x100F will be present in the x100VI. Sometimes, I think I miss the hybrid VF and film simulations of the Fuji, but not enough to have both cameras at my disposal. The way I think about it is, when I owned both, I picked up the Leica Q way more.

P.S. Those kind of camera skins are a great way to disguise the Leica Q. Most photographers have no idea what camera I'm using under my camera skin unless I tell them it is a Leica Q.

Hi guys,

I need a sounding board...

I wont lie, and I wish I didnt, but I like buying new cameras and lenses, I am better than I used to be (promise), and what I buy I use a lot for what its worth. I fear my £50 deposit on an X100 may be a silly idea...

I have a Q3 that I love, but dont always want to take it everywhere, be it a local walk, friends event, somewhere where it'll get lost, I dont baby my stuff but could do without losing it or it getting in the way on occasions. Often I walk and see a love image, lovely light or moment.

In my head an X100 VI, will be this amazing, smaller, take anywhere camera that I can use alongside the Q3 and other larger systems I have. But reality and logic may say otherwise.

I also have an iPhone 15 Pro that does take great RAW images of static subjects, useless for anything else, though.
Buy something which fits into shirt pockets instead, a Ricoh GrIII(x) or RX100 Vii.

Since you already own a premium large-sensor compact, take a look at the Sony RX100VII for the outings where you don't want to carry the Leica. When I travel I take my Fuji X100V as the "large sensor" camera with fixed lens, and the RX100VII is great in the pocket for when I want a range of focal lengths or it is not convenient to carry the Fuji. While I am not making billboard prints, I am usually very satisfied with the output of the RX100 1" sensor. It's super compact and quite versatile.

My reply is highly subjective, but if I had your current gear, buying the X100VI would be a complete waste of money.

If you want to collect nice gear, by all means, go for it - nothing wrong with that. If you want to do photography, you absolutely do not need the X100VI.

Again, high subjective.

More blunt than what I tried to say, but I agree with the bluntness and the statement itself.

Only if you sell your Q3 :-) Seriously: The Q3 is the better camera. Don't be shy to take it anywhere - get proper insurance. It is made for that. Do you want to use the OVF? Think twice about that. The EVF is much worse than the EVF on the Q.

The x100vi is a nice camera - the Q3 is way nicer. Try MF on the x100 - it is terrible. Then try it on the Q.
Been trying hard to convince you - and bought one today myself. I hereby resign as your coach :-)

But I stand by everything I said above. Still, the X100VI is a very nice camera, and while it is to early to call, even AF-S may have been fixed. But don't quote me on that :-)

Put your name down for one.

The best camera is always the one in your hand.

Whilst I only have the humble iPhone 13 Pro which is theoretically not as advanced as the 15, it has helped supplement my travel gear (Canon) on walkabout.

My walkabout kit is the great little EOS M5, the 11-22 lens or the pin sharp 22 f2. Even that camera and lens cannot compete with the X100 VI for resolution and exposure options. I always use RAW on Canon for quality preservation. No need on the VI - use the film simulators. It’s 40mp.

So why have I invested a small fortune in the Fuji and a few of its “add ons"
  • It feels right in your hand
  • IBIS - big time
  • 6/4k video to far better quality than an iphone
  • great lens
  • to get back to basics. My learning tools from the 1970s were manual focus rangefinders and SLRs, then the superb little AE Minox 35GT and then the Fuji DL mini. 35mm and 28mm respectively.
The Fuji VI in manual or AE priority emulates these great tiny cameras. See a shot, walk about to frame the shot, check the light, adjust for exposure correction, sometimes bracket, click, check it worked, if not repeat.

Photography as I learned back in the late 1960s but we had no ‘check it worked’ options.

The shame is how, yet again, the style council has jumped in - to be seen with the Fuji rather than know how to use it for photography. There is better vlogging gear for them so they are holding up us enthusiasts and pros from getting hold of one.

In a few weeks I will take the Fuji on tour to China for a bucket list trip involving major cities, historic old cities, parts of the wall less well trod, rivers, nighttime tours etc. I’m planning my kit as there is a lot of travel - planes, trains, buses and boats. Think I’m down to:

Fuji for cities, night shots, people etc

Canon M5 plus 11-22, 22 (tiny and sharp), 18-55 and 55-200. Whilst the tele zoom is not the greatest it’s small and has IS. For a laugh I tried the M5 with an adaptor and the great EF 70-300mm mk2. It works fine and goes up to 480mm but rather bulky. IS and image quality are very good for the money.

i suspect that my main tool will be the Fuji using Velvia, Provia, Reala and black and white (acros or Neopan as it was in my day). Why? Fuji has always been my go to film stock and having those emulations on tap with 40mp is a dream combination.

Leicas are beautiful to own and use but maybe too valuable for the kind of travel I do. Like me get one and enjoy it.

I’ll still take my iPhone - if I can work out iCloud and mobile signals etc. iPad Pro for culling and editing photos.

Hi,

Thought I'd update you.

I bought an RX100 VII and GR IIIx... One will be going back though so we will see which one.

Thanks for the help. The X100 VI wont solve my carry anywhere wants, so I guess its not right as much as I would like it.

Cheers for all the help

I have the exact same dilemmas as you and understand your question. I have a Q2 and an X100V. The latter is not "throw it in a shoulder bag and forget it's there" enough, to make the difference that I am looking for. I think you will find the same.

For me, it's not just the size of camera, but also the weight and the perceived preciousness of the camera that makes the difference. I always want to have a "grab it and go" camera sitting by the front door charged up to come with me on errands and coffee with friends.

I have tried the GR3 but no matter how hard I persist, I cannot get used to a camera without an EVF. I have tried the Leica D-Lux 7 and whilst I really enjoy the IQ, it has this slowness to it, when turning it on, switching focal lengths, etc. that I found annoying. When I am on the street I want to be able to see a scene and be photographing it within two seconds.

I think your answer, as you state above, is to get an older, used X100 (I loved the X100F) that already has a couple of dings. The original Leica Q is about the same price on the used market as a brand new X100VI and it has such a nice sensor. It's also a touch lighter weight than the Q3.

Right now, my grab it and go camera is a Canon R8 with a 28mm pancake lens that I bought used. I only got it because it was a great price and I was curious. Its very light to carry, full frame and not precious. I am actually enjoying it a lot. It has amazing AF and the most noise-free sensor I have ever used.

By the way - almost every camera I own was bought used, always being patient to wait for good deals so that I can re-sell them at the exact same price or just a tiny bit less. Occasionally I sell them for more than I paid. Its a great way to deal with GAS.
