Just want to post a 'beware' story...

If this isn't in the right forum, I'm OK if moderators need to move it.

I recently changed camera systems, and had one lens remaining.

I decided to go online and get some quotes for sales and Adorama gave me the best price.

The lens was in fantastic condition. I take good care of my gear. No marks, no issues, original packaging, etc. It was in perfect condition.

I receive a shipping label from Adorama and their online trade information tells me within 3 days of receipt I'll receive a call with a quote. They received the lens on 2/13/24 and by 2/16 I heard nothing. Let me say they're terribly difficult to get a hold of. I went to their online chat and was told by customer service that someone would be in touch.

On 2/20/24 I get an email from their trade department that my lens was received and someone would be in touch in 5-7 business days! Not what their website says, but OK, I'll be patient. Fast forward to 2/29/24, and still no contact. I reach out again.

By the end of the day on 2/29/24 I get a quote of $000.00. sent in my email. I responded to that email that I don't understand, and received a response from the rep that "It's been a long day and my caffeine levels are running low." and received a quote for significantly less than I was originally quoted.

When I questioned this, I was told the condition was "V" which is not even in their trade/used conditions. I asked for clarification and the reply on the condition was "Barrel appears well used and may include dings, scrapes/scratches, heavy brassing. Lens glass may have marks or haze that should not affect picture quality."

Now I'm really concerned. I sent back photos of the lens before I shipped it and told them their evaluation was inaccurate.

I did not receive any response.

Finally I called customer service and over the phone, the rep explained to me that you cannot call the trades department, and she would reach out to them by email (which has been happening every time I try to get someone there). I told her I'd like to either speak with a manager, or have them get involved. I have a feeling that they didn't even open the box and look inside. I also told her I feel like I'm being scammed at this point because this just isn't right.

As of today, 3/1/24, Adorama has had my lens in their posession for 18 days and I can't get this resolved.

I'll update this post with new developments.

This is terrible! I use MPB because they give me the most money & are easy to deal with. Two weeks ago, I sent a lot of gear to them. Got there in two days. Two days after that I got final quote. Accepted and cash in my account next day.

Keep calling & emailing.

Marie

Update: I called customer service early Friday morning. The rep I spoke with told me she would have someone from the trade dept. get in touch with me right away.
NOTHING.
Today I replied to the same email thread I've been corresponding to TWICE to get someone back in touch with me and again, nothing.
I just went to their online chat and the rep I had there promised me I would be contacted today.

Meanwhile, I visited the NY BBB site. When I clicked on reviews, the first review that came up was from 2/29/24 and it was my exact same situation!

Looking on Google to leave a review and I came across an email contact of nancym_at_adorama_dot_com and sent her my saga in an email to see if I can get anywhere going that route. There are similar reviews on Google as mine as well.

At the end of the day yesterday I actually received a phone call from the rep I was dealing with who told me the quote was increased, and everything was finalized, if I choose to accept the offer.

When I logged into my account, I did see that it was updated and I had options to trade/sell/return.

While it was still $30 less than I was originally quoted, I took the offer and the direct deposit option to be finished once and for all.

Payment was deposited today into my bank account, finally.

Tomorrow will mark THREE WEEKS since they received my lens. Hopefully my constant contacts lit a fire somewhere to get results, but after this, I won't be doing business in any way with Adorama again.

On a side note, I sold a lens to KEH a month ago, and the transaction was quick and smooth.
Only downside I'm seeing is that whatever quote you originally get, be prepared to be met with a lower price, even if you're conservative in your condition.

I've used KEH but Adorama's $30 below the quote is within reason - too bad it took three weeks

They're all in it to make a profit so give them a break. Its just business. No point getting insulted, take or leave their offer.

Adorama/B&H (same ownership) always low ball what they offer on trades. No news here. Occasionally you can dicker with them if planning to buy something new, but its very much like dealing with car salesmen throwing around numbers. To you its one trade, to them its one of many.

As noted MPB and KEH generally offer more than the above but KEH in my experience tends to under grade gear, sometimes bizarrely, which is the same as lowballing.

When you get your gear back you can take satisfaction that it cost them to ship the gear both ways, so there's that. If you don't want to go that route, or fee added marketplaces like Ebay, you take the best offer you can get.

B&H and Adorama are not owned by the same people.

Same here. Dealing with MPB has been fantastic. Once gear is received it is evaluated in 24-48 hours in my experience, and an offer is made. On one occasion they increased the amount they had originally offered on the online quote even though I listed it as “like new”.

One final follow-up.

I received a call from Adorama a few days after everything was completed.

Apparently they were looking into the situation and agreed that something was not right.

They gave me a credit on my account for the price difference in quotes, which is fine with me.

I explained to the person I spoke with that I was more upset by the amount of time it took them to take action, and the fact that both times the lens was evaluated, it was obvious they weren't looking at MY lens.

If I had to guess, I'd say part of the reason is the lens went to a warehouse in Tennessee (which I felt was a bit strange and should have been a flag to me) and most likely sat there untouched until I started to inquire. If it had gone to the store in NYC, it may have been dealt with quicker.

The transaction is finished, and fortunately I did not have to go the route of the BBB, but my lesson is learned.

As I said earlier, I made a deal with KEH over a different lens, and it went quickly and smoothly. It tooks a few days, instead of almost 3 weeks and constant attempts to get in touch with someone.
