Can you help me understand what you are trying to do here? You are passing a DNG through resolve as a way of simulating a filmic (stills) look, in this case, Velvia? It seems a roundabout way of doing things if that's the case. What's the benefit?

What kind of film are you hoping to emulate? Can you explain why you think that film should lose the ability to show highlights?

Yes, better. Some of those examples do resemble film and are not unexpectedly dark.
