Need to replace my Epson XP-860 printer with a photo printer that has an ADF

My XP-860 gave me the dreaded "a printer's ink pad is at the end of it's service life" message and it will no longer print. It is about 9 years old and at this point I don't want to invest any money in repairing it.

I would appreciate suggestions for a reasonably priced all-in-one photo printer similar to my XP-860 which also has a automatic 2 sided ADF. I don't need a large format printer as the largest size I ever print for my home use is 8x10.

I'm about 96% sure that there is no such thing: the last all-in-one with both enhanced photo-printing features and any ADF was the XP-860. The closest things to successors to the XP-860 (2014) are the XP-8500 (2017), XP-8600 (2019), and XP-8700 (2022), and none of those has any ADF.

So I think your options include:

* find some sort of resetter hack, and maybe (but probably not necessary) a new waste ink pad, for your XP-8600;

* accept that you need two devices, one with an ADF and another with enhanced photo-printing capability; or

* accept an all-in-one that does not have enhanced photo-printing capability (and even there, the options appear to be limited, but if you can live with non-duplex ADF / scanning, then there are more options, maybe a Canon TR8620).

Thanks for the quick reply!

According to the Epson website there isn’t a reset tool for the XP-860 using a Mac and the reset is needed before replacing the waste ink pad, they only can do this reset code with a Windows PC.
I have a small desk and there is only room for one printer plus my wife would shoot me with the additional clutter. 😂

I definitely need an automatic 2 sided ADF for my wife’s small business needs as she is constantly printing and scanning 2 sided documents. If I can’t find an enhanced photo printer what is the best ADF printer out there today that with good resolution that can print photos for my personal use?

PS, I even looked at eBay for a refurbished or new XP-860 and didn’t find anything.

Oh, you probably won't get this from Epson! We're talking more third-party hacks. And you might have to, e.g., connect a Windows laptop to your XP-860 to run it. There was something called "WIC Reset" or something like that, that several people around here reported using successfully. No, I don't have a link. You could search old posts for it.

Looking at B&H, going to inkjet printers -> all-in-one with Features: Duplex scanning, there were 17 hits. None of them appears to have enhanced photo-printing capability, and many of them are large, expensive, and/or use inks not really suitable for photo printing. (And one doesn't even appear to have any ADF.)
PS, I even looked at eBay for a refurbished or new XP-860 and didn’t find anything.
New or refurbished samples of older-model printers offered on eBay (or Amazon, for that matter) tend to be outrageously expensive.

There is a Mac version of WicReset. Use it all the time. Use with USB connection. The program allows a trial reset. I think it sets the counter back a few percent.

Lift the printer and look underneath. Some printers (like my XP-950) were in a transition stage. No official user replaceable maintenance box but one was there. I was able to do a refill and reset. I will be doing the same thing with my XP-7100 when the time comes, as it has no official box, but it can be refilled and reset. Pads available on AlliExpress.

The XP-7100 would be a good replacement. Often, $119 on Epson ReNew Center.

I have used those codes a number of times over the year.

Good luck.

Spoke too soon on XP-7100, but at $119 still a great value.

I definitely want an enhanced photo printer like the XP-860 as I am constantly printing family pictures. As mentioned my wife uses the ADF on a regular basis.

I have 2 choices on how to proceed.

1) I found a Epson local service center that will replace the ink pad on my XP-860 and do the reset for $55 and have it back to me in 1 day.

2) I can purchase a new XP-7100 for $129 on Amazon or at Best Buy.

One other issue to consider is that I also have a backup supply of 277XL cartridges in all of the six colors I use for the XP-860 that would not be usable with the XP-7100.

I am leaning towards the repair option, am I wrong not buying a new printer?

I like to keep things running if possible. I think that $55 charge is quite reasonable in today's world and you have some carts to use up.

We're not holding our breath, but maybe Epson will break down and issue a tank version of a printer like the XP-860 in the U.S. The advantage of XP-7100 is there is a pigment black ink for documents. It will scan doubled-sided and create OCR PDFs like your printer also seems to do.

I like the Epson scan software quite a bit.

If I didn't have those six backup ink cartridges I would probably select a new XP-7100 for $129.

If they did offer a tank version of the XP-860 with a ADF I would not hesitate as I also like Epson's software.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance.

But the XP-7100 is a CYMK printer. I doubt that it would approach the photo quality of the XP-860 (CYMK plus light magenta and light cyan).

I guess that life is full of compromises.

Might not, but having a dye black makes a difference. You do get a photo quality print on RC paper. Sure, ET-8550 or XP-15000 will do much better photos.

I have no experience with either.

For other readers: the ET-8550 is a 5 photo ink printer (CYMK plus gray) plus black for documents. And a flatbed scanner. The XP-15000 is 6 color (CYMK plus gray and red) printer (only).

My choice is to have a separate inkjet for photos, with "laser" (probably LED) printers for documents. None sit on my desk, though, and I don't share them with anyone else.

I agree but my Catch 22 is that I need an automatic ADF and Epson stopped making a reasonably priced photo printer like the XP-860 which has it.

I believed you.

I regret that I don't know of an MFD (multifunction device) that would serve your wife and also be a good photo printer.

For my own sake, I'm glad that I don't have to deal with space requirements like yours. (My house is small, but I have a dedicated office space, which I share with no one.)

Trust me, I wish I had the space but we live in a condo and I use my 2nd bedroom as a home office which is why the XP-860 was a great compromise at a reasonable price.

I may face a choice, someday. A) share a wall with others or B) die. I may prefer the latter.

Do not get an Epson 4-ink EcoTank printer like the ET-3850 or ET-4850. These are poor photo printers. I know, because I have one. Good for office documents, poor for photos (colors are off).
Thanks for the warning, it is greatly appreciated! :-)

I think the repair option is a good one, I'm actually in the same position as you.

tip: the WicReset has a trial option, that lets you set back the counter a little bit and use it a few more times.

I have purchased a DIY kit, and a code for the WicReset utility for my xp-860.

here is a video on how to do it:
