While not having much to do this morning I used RUFUS to install Windows 11 23H2 on a 1TB HDD in my dual-boot desktop:

It seemed to take forever but it was probably less than an hour.

I have never received the update through the normal update route.

Running three Win11 laptops in this house and the 23H2 update came through on different dates well separated. This one happened on the 9th Nov, the others days/weeks apart. In Australia, which often seems to be at the wrong end of the Earth.

Right! The HDD was left over from a previous computer and I hated to throw it away. I stuck it in this desktop and use it, more or less, like a backup for the Windows 11 installation on the SSD.

This is the message I see on my 11th gen. Intel NUC.

My knee-jerk reaction to the language used was “OK, they’re just telling me it’s downloading in the background.”

I found it rather odd to see this message for three consecutive days though. Everything I read about 23H2 as an update was that it should be very light weight with almost all of the changes and new content previously delivered. Only after that third day did I bother to click the ‘Learn More’ link.

It turns out there’s actually a “safeguard hold” on my system getting 23H2. The page that pulled up telling me this after I clicked the ‘Learn More’ link states….
The information on this page is tailored when accessed directly through Windows Update Settings on your device.
“Oh, nice.” I thought.

Only for the bottom of the page to state…
A safeguard hold is currently in place on your device. Details are not available at this time. When the update is available, you’ll see it on the Windows Update page in Settings.
sigh…

Regardless, I guess the important takeaway is that “...on its way to your device” is Microsoft-speak for “you’ll get it eventually.”

Every update of Windows seems to me to be associated with yet another raft of problems and incompatibilities. I have disabled all automatic updates using the group policy editor.

As a matter of fact I don't update or upgrade anything unless I have a) a defined need so to do and b) a roll-back path.

I'm not saying (I) don't update but only as and when one chooses: things happen on my PCs (and cameras and most other devices) only at my behest.

For ways to prevent Windows updates see:

Agreed on the roll-back path (which is part of Microsoft updates), but user backups are also important.

Concerning "defined needs" -- there is a lot going on under the hood that the user is not aware of, including security flaws that need patching.

MS has 1.4 billion users. They have to roll out major updates over several weeks to avoid overloading their servers.

No need to explain that to me, I knew that the rollout is staged to avoid overload to servers.

I was wrong about my dates of 23H2 on my three Win11, the first was on 1st Nov, next on 8th Nov and the third on 9th Nov, so they were closer than I thought.

To keep things secure I daily seek updates and not just leave it up to M'soft and their default potential 7 day delay.

The only real pain for me with Win11 is that damn taskbar can't be slung across to the side, it interferes too much down the bottom and doesn't self hide at times.

That and of course the way it defaults to trying to throw everything to OneDrive and many times I need to find out which set of Documents/Downloads/Pictures stuff landed in.

I use OneDrive in a minimal way to make swaps between laptops easier, otherwise I would happily disable it altogether as it's been badly handled and really confuses many as to where their stuff is hiding.
