Zf + Mount Adapters

Great info, thank you!

I'd really Iike to use ETZ21 Pro and Sigma I-Series lenses.

I wonder if the Sony mount could be changed to Nikon later?
The answer is yes:

There is no definite, explicit statement by Sigma regarding paid “mount conversion” service specifically from Sony E-mount to Nikon Z-mount.

The answer is: Nobody knows.

Have you actually tried?
I’m particularly excited about the I-series lenses on the Zf, so I’ve been weighing this a bit. On the one hand I can get an adapter and start using the Sony versions of those lenses today, plus then I’d have access to other Sony lenses that look appealing to me. But then the rumor came through that Sigma will these lenses for Z mount at some point, and then I got a little stuck. But I now believe that if the company is producing the lenses for both mounts, then they’ll certainly be able to do a mount conversion between those mounts—and will be perfectly happy to take our money to do so.

So I will take a small gamble and get the Sony versions. Worst case scenario I have to keep using the adapter, but I really don’t think that’ll be the case.
The answer is: At your own risk.

Your initial reply “The answer is yes” was misleading or, at best, wishful thinking.
Yep, and that’s that’s exactly how I ended my last post. It’s a gamble but a small one IMO. I’m buying some Sigma I mount lenses to use on the Zf now. If and when Sigma releases Z mount versions, I can wait and see if they offer conversions (likely), I can keep using the lenses with the adapter (which seems perfectly doable, especially since the adapter is so small you don’t even know it’s there), or I can sell the Sony mount lenses and buy the new Nikon mount ones.

So yes, at your own risk. But there’s not really much of a risk involved here.

Thanks for sharing. This is very helpful info. I’m tempted in getting the Zf, but am not impressed with no aperture rings on any of the Nikon Z lenses. So was going to dismiss it until I found out about the Z to E adapted. Also looking at getting some of those lovely Sigma Contemporary f2 primes. Starting with the 35mm and 65mm.

Glad I am of some help. Hope things will work out to your liking.

This from my recent visit to a fine arts museum…

Where did the rumour that sigma will bring their i series to Z mount come from? That would be ideal but great to see the adaptor works as makes for an easy transition to a Nikon body from Sony.

Did you try to update the ETZ21 with the September firmware, that will most likely solve the problem.

Chances are you got the "new" ETZ21 pro with new firmware already. Based on Megadapt, the pro version is the same as the original except for the mechanical mount difference ("improved" to mount Tamron lens easier but super tight to mount on Z8/Z9).

1. keep adaptor on

2. turn camera power off before changing

3 AND take off the adaptor if you plan to use the battery tomorrow. The adaptor will drain the battery overnight if it stays on. Doesn't happen all the time but it did last night.

I used my Megadap ETZ21 Pro at firmware version 1.0 (as installed in the copy of the adapter in the box, as sold and received). All the E-mount lenses I tried, after the initial mounting of the adapter, worked.

Three days later, I decided to update the adapter firmware to version 1.26 (10 Sep 2023), which is the latest, downloadable from Megadap website. I was rather uncertain, not wanting to “spoil” the fun I had been having up to that point, should the update cause complications. I went ahead after receiving a second written confirmation by the Laowa distributor that they would take it back and do a full refund for any reason.

One nice thing about the Pro version is that one can update the “lens firmware” from the camera, using the same Firmware Version menu, just like updating the camera firmware.

Things continue to work nicely. The adapter is still on my Zf.

I have zero mechanical fit difficulties in using my copy of the Megadap ETZ21 Pro on my Zf, both on the body side and on the lens side.

As long as it works for you, that's what matters!

Do you happen to have any of the three lens that refuses to work with my Zf+Megadapt?

They are 35/1.4ZA, 50/1.4ZA and 100/2.8 STF GM.

Yeah, now when we have amazing Zf, Sigma must be planning quick production of those I series for Z mount. It really sounds like right thing to do now.
