I had some problem opening my Outlook which was hung in starting ("processing").

My experience told me that it was a corrupted pst file. I recalled I had to do the repair once in while in the past. But it's been so long ago and I've forgotten the exact utility to do it.

My initial Google search landed me to Steller Outlook Repair Tool free download. It went through repairing the file. When it got to the end, it asked me to pay $79 to save the repair file. I got suspicious and stopped there.

I went back and searched more and found that the MS Outlook utility is built in the original install (scanpst.exe). Ran it and it repaired the file and problem solved. No payment.

Isn't it a scam for Steller to charge for something that's free?

It's "lure you" ware. Shows you what it would do, IF you buy the product. Lots of companies do that.

That said, I had a bad experience with a different Stellar Phoenix product. Didn't really work effectively. Support sucked. In the end I just gave up.

Just run the free built in pst repair utility SCANPST.EXE which for my Office installation is in folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16

If it does what it says it will do without stealing money or information, I don't see how it could be called a scam.

There are lots of services that will charge you money for things that you could do yourself for free. In some cases, you're paying for convenience. In other cases, the paid services are more powerful or more flexible.

Use to have to run scanpst and repairs all the time when compnaies ran .PST files on network drives. Don't even think I could find it anymore.

Nothing like 4GB PST files in roaming Terminal Server profiles. Fun days.

In my specific case with Stellar Phoenix, it did an incomplete and buggy job with the conversion. (Eudora email to Lightroom PST email.)

In some cases, the services are preying on people who do not have much technical knowledge. i'm perfectly happy to pay for the "Pro" version of utilities that have real value (e.g. Goodsync or Revo Uninstaller) but programs that duplicate Windows built-in functions.

Of course, it doesn't help that Windows is very complex below the surface, and I don't think that Microsoft does enough to help the "average" user.

If your email provider uses IMAP and you use Outlook, your emails are stored in an OST file which is replicated on the server. This can lead to all kinds of problems if you damage your local copy and have to regenerate that file, as the Tasks and Contacts are only local and can get lost. A PST file is more reliable because it can be restored entirely from a local backup.

Some suggest that in the OST case, you are safer creating a PST file specifically for your Tasks and Contacts (and better to store your Schedule there as well).

To manage all of this, I recommend Kernel products; trust-worthy professional software tools for PST and OST files: https://www.nucleustechnologies.com/

I use their OST to PST converter for various conversion and diagnostic purposes. I have no other connection with them.

That's exactly what I do, since I use Outlook on both my desktop and a laptop. And of course I back up locally.

Thank you for the recommendation.

Due respect to you, I certainly do not agree with some of your points about the Microsoft free inbox repair tool. ScanPST.exe repairs the corrupt PST file, but it has limitations in terms of capability and capacity for repairing corrupt PST files. In addition, here we all come with our expertise to give our best to the people to get data loss from corrupt PST. You can read the limitations of scanpast at the URL https://www.slipstick.com/problems/pst-repair/repair-a-damaged-personal-folders-pst-file. For example, it may fail to repair PST files that are larger than 2GB or that are severely corrupt. If it does find the message or the subfolder, ScanPST validates the message or the folder. Read more at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/o...es/how-to-repair-personal-folder-file#folders. You must also know that SCANPST repairs PST files by removing or purging bad items from the PST file, such as bad emails or folders. That is why it provides an option to backup PST files.

Stellar Repair for Outlook overcomes the limitations of SCANPST and helps you repair severely corrupt and/or large-sized PST files (up to 50GB or more) with complete integrity and precision. It also provides several advanced features that ScanPST does not. I hope it solves your purpose.

I’ve had no issues with Outlook, but I will say that my .PST file is rather compact. I routinely deal with emails as they arrive, saving attachments, and sometimes saving important emails as MS-Word documents into the general filing system before deleting the emails. I don’t use Outlook for any other purpose.

I do know that Outlook likes to be shut down properly, rather than being open when Windows is shut down or crashes. But Windows doesn’t crash, does it?

They really should warn about payment beforehand.

There was an obvious scam in our state some years ago. The free official site to verify car registration details had been hijacked and included with a paywall on a commercial site.

I have used Outlook for over 25 years now, and I have never had issue with scanpst not fixing problems I encountered with corrupted file.

I had had more problem with earlier versions. I only had this problem once with my 2010 and scanpst fixed it.

I had a lot more emails 10-15 years ago when I was one of the large sellers on eBay. Now I have retired and have about only 50 mail messages a day on an average.

Are you sure you don't work for Stellar?
