I want to buy a phone that shoots raw. Two phones in mind are the S23 and Pixel 8 Pro.

With my Canon cameras I always shoot raw. I like being able to make adjustments to enhance images. So using raw is important for me. I must be weird because I enjoy photo editing. ;-)

Are there any drawbacks to shooting in jpeg + raw? I know it will use more memory. Anything else?

Raw images I can download to my pc and edit. Jpegs I can share with others quickly.

Also, with raw images do I need proprietary software to edit and convert, or can I use any photo editing program? For example, Lightroom.

Thanks in advance.

Just like any raw file the software that you use must have support for the camera body.

Just as Lightroom (or other companies) adds support for a new Canon camera raw file after it is released, Lightroom adds support for new smartphone cameras as they come out. Sometimes there can be a bit of a lag. Your best bet is to determine what software that you wish to use and then check if it currently supports the model of smartphone that you are thinking of buying.

Hope that helps.

Yes that helps, thanks.

Beware: all softwares don't support all raw files.

I've been using DxO for more than 15 years to process my raw files. I shoot only raw with all my cameras.

I have a Pixel 7, but DxO doesn't support the raw files (which are dng)

I also have On1 Photoraw, which opens the Pixel 7 dng files.

I just tested Pixelmator pro, which also opens the Pixel 7 dng files.

Both do a good job, but I must say that most of the times, I cannot get better results with the dngs, compared to the original jpegs.

Hope this helps

Thanks, I'll keep this in mind.

You can use Rawtherapee, Darktable and Hugin in Linux to edit, make panorama and merge bracket into HDR.

Do you shoot in continuous shooting or burst mode?

If yes one thing to know is smartphones including S23 Ultra can only shoot 1 frame rate per second.

Compared to some entry level models like the Canon T100/3000d/4000d, you'll be getting atleast 4 frames per second (I am just using this as an example).

I've got some really old and cheap cameras from back in 2018 that can shoot 6 frames per second (RAW + JPEG).

One frame per second is plenty fast for me. I don't plan on doing any action photography with my phone.

This equals my assessment.

Google's default jpg processing is generally so good, that working with RAW on a phone is not worth the effort, unlike with my MILC. The phone is a computer that stacks, adjusts DR, checks for motion blur, and numerous other tweaks that you might, or might not, make manually with a RAW. For me, a minor brightness or color balance to the resulting jpg is better than trying to edit a RAW from the phone that has not already had the automated processing that the phone can provide.

"Use Camera2 API" should be enabled.
I ticked it, now I can shoot RAW but still only allows me 1 RAW per click (I mention this because I cannot burst with it, no matter press and hold or sliding the shutter button up/sideways/downways, no continuous shooting).

The S23 Ultra's ExpertRAW app I can press and hold the shutter button and it will continue taking RAW photos (but very slow, around 1 frame per second)

It's the burst mode and burst interval you need to enable from the icon that has 3 horisontal sliders.

Thank you, it definitely works.

I'm getting 3 fps now instead of 1 fps.

Another thing note is the file sizes on each of these are the same (around 24MB), whereas when using burst mode with expertRAW I was getting one size around 24MB and the next was around 3MB, so definitely better on hedgecam for sure.

The output with ExpertRAW is definitely better though because I'm sure some processing takes place. On hedgecam they look unprocessed.

But overall I'm super happy I can now take 3 fps RAW images with my smartphone.

Thank you so much!

If the idea is shooting JPEG/DNG in Burst Mode, you might look at paid Camera FV-5 (FGAE) - free Lite version can test with reduced rez - a fully manual app that has a Burst setting for simultaneous JPEG and uncompressed DNG - as well as PNG. Burst just fires continuously during a long shutter press. Not much for HDR stacking, but good intervalometer and interface - my favorite jPEG/DNG app.

I have the paid app and just gave it a try. It's definitely a more polish app and I think I'm getting 3 fps here too with the S23 Ultra. It also allows both JPG/PNG + RAW output so that's a bonus (hedgecam only allowed RAW only).

Thank you!

Just a last question to @Sugasmune, @I2K4.

Does Hedgecam and Camera FV5 have focus peaking?

I can find focus assist/zoom when focusing on them.

Glad if it works for you - I've noticed triple output with PNG as well. If you haven't seen it, documentation is quite good for a phone app.

(I see Hedgecam2 was recently updated. It was unstable on my current phone with some settings, but maybe that's been fixed - am going to play with it.)
