Canon "Retro" Camera: Would You Buy It?

Before Canon AE-1, there were no widely popular Canon cameras. In terms of market share, Canon lagged behind Nikon, Pentax, & Minolta.
MAYBE Canon should put out a Spotmatic look-a-like! They would sell more of them than Pentax would!!! LoL

The one thing that would spell Retro for me would be to have a manual film winder and 24 or 26 frames to shoot focussing manually with a split prism viewfinder and guessing the exposure on the basis of a simple omnidirectional exposure meter. I remember that time fondly - but don't want to encumber my enjoyment of photography with a throwback into those times.

49mm screw mount, as well? ;-)
I said Look-a-Like, not a full bore replica!!!

Basically a fully modern ML Canon with pentaprism snuff box for mini blunts on top so the younger generation to discover photography!!! LoL

John

if it had all the physical look and feel of these old analog film models with the technology (eye autofocus, subject tracking, FPS, etc) of mirrorless cameras. If there was someway to adapt the old AE-1/F1 interface with these new technologies, I would buy one for nostalgia value...but these retro camera would still have to function in the modern era, e.g. be able to take photos without sacrificing quality and usability.

I mean since I bought my R3 and with all the benefits of this new mirrorless technology, I cannot go back to the DSLR way of doing things, let along the way we did things with film cameras like the AE-1/F1. The EVF along with exposure simulation was a game changer for me.

That wouldn't be a replica - as far as I know, nobody has ever used a 49mm screw mount. Asahi originally used a 37mm screw thread, before adopting the East German Zeiss/Praktica (or Pentacon) 42mm thread.

49mm does have significance for Pentax lenses, in that it was the main filter thread size for SMC M series lenses.

Here ends the pedantic history lesson. ;)

Only if smaller than Nikon Z-F .. same size as Sony A7c

Hey, I was close. ;-)

It will depend on sensor size and form factor. Rangefinder style or SLR style.

Since Fuji is cropped or MF, I won't include them.

Nikon already has the lead(ZF). If Sony follows suit, then Canon will be sorely trailing.

When the overall camera market is continually shrinking, Niche higher selling items like these type of more Analog type cameras might actually make far more sense them some are thinking.

It actually wouldn't the be the worst idea in the World to have actually decent looking cameras with better then average performance.
The average Joe does not want to be seen with a DSLR blob in public. But a Leica? That's different.
No way in H*LL would you catch me with a Leica. NOTHING screams Old Man amateur with a camera like a Leica! Kinda like old guys finally buying a Corvette, grey hair no teeth and all!! LoL

I've done events where there are hundreds of credentialed pros shooting and NEVER have I ever seen a Leica! You wanna look really bad asse, carry two Canon 1Dx's with a 200mm 1.8 and a 400 2.8. There is no better looking dslr BLOB than that!!! :-D

I have ZERO qualms with carrying a dslr but what I would never buy is a retro camera.

100 years ago, Leica pioneered the compact 35mm rangefinder. Professionals & artists used it to document the world. 50 years ago, Nikon took over as the choice of the photojournalist.

Now Leica is a luxury brand, like Rolex, which is not even as accurate as a cheapo quartz watch. But there are people who are inspired by just holding a Leica. Good for them. Please don't ask Canon for a Leica look-alike. NO WAY. It is like wearing a fake Rolex.

But Canon got their start in camera making by making look-a-Leicas, and very good ones at that. Couldn't get more retro than that.
Oh, well, hey, now that's different! A Canon look-a-Leica, now that's a maybe....., but a real Leica look-a-Like, NO WAY!!! LoL

I'm perfectly happy with the ergonomics of the R6; I don't really have an interest in an interfact that's a lot different. But I didn't start out with fully manual SLRs in the 70s/80s either.

There is no doubt that Canon could sell some additional camera’s if they launch a retro model, but I don’t think they have a signature cam like Nikon F that they can leverage.

Canon is more of a futuristic type of vendor where the T90 defined the direction for them.

My Leica M10 covers my retro needs and it is fun to use, while no contest to my R5 😉.
