It's good to read the Zf Custom settings includes AF-area mode + AF-ON, also Spot-metering can be assigned to a function control.

This is an essential feature IME to toggle AF modes for Focus Handover, but Nikon has stubbornly ignored requests for a firmware update to add this feature into the Z6 and Z7, among other capable ILCs.

Oh, that's interesting.

Two choices from the online Zf manual page: f2: Custom controls (shooting)

[AF-area mode]

Holding the control selects a preset AF-area mode. The AF-area mode previously in effect is restored when the control is released.
  • To choose the AF-area mode, press {multi-selector} when [AF-area mode] is highlighted.

[AF-area mode + AF-ON]

Holding the control selects a preset AF-area mode and initiates autofocus. The AF-area mode previously in effect is restored when the control is released.
  • To choose the AF-area mode, press {multi-selector} when [AF-area mode + AF-ON] is highlighted.
