A new video from Nico Photography News

(go to 4min)

New 200ISO colour film stock is being developed by ORWO.

There are no sample photos for "NC200" that I'm aware of but it will come in 135 and 120 formats.

Also, its a true new film stock, not re-spooling or rebranding of Kodak film, because apparently the beta rolls were hand coated.

Thoughts anyone? I know there's not a lot of info to go on.

I like the way he apologised for everything he’d said about ORWO (both on video and at the show!). Any new colour film has got to be a good thing, but I’m not sure how you market it. Do you sell it cheap? In which case it’s got to be less than ColorPlus, so £8ish a roll, or do you make it expensive, where it’s competing with Portra. Lomography seem to have judged it well in that they can sell a “retro” (I.e. colour shifted ) film (color ‘92) for around £12

I think we have to be realistic. I don't think orwo has the economy of scale to compete with ColorPlus pricing. As long as it's not too expensive then I'll give at least one roll a go. I'm excited for any new film stock regardless of the look because it's good for the analogue community and there will be someone who can use it in some creative way.

The current ORWO Wolfen is around £15 a roll, which for me would be about as much as I’d pay. But while I was looking for a price for the ORWO I saw that Lomo 800 is £21/roll and sold out - which is a crazy price.

ORWO is technically no more, i don't know for international markets, but ORWO is now FilmoTec GmbH since many years, and of course, it's a german brand. :) I'd be delighted to see another new, fresh color Film into 135 format.

About the ORWO history:

FilmoTec GmbH can tell a long story about the production of films as recording materials. It begins in 1909 with the foundation of the "Aktien-Gesellschaft für Anilin-Fabrication" Agfa and leads in GDR times via the VEB Filmfabrik Wolfen and its brand ORWO to today's FilmoTec GmbH.

After 1945, the film factory - since 1964 with the brand ORWO (acronym from Original Wolfen) - had the monopoly on film production in the GDR. In addition to films for photography, cine films, reprography and X-ray film material, technical films and disks as well as magnetic tapes were produced. To this day, we produce black-and-white films - in demand worldwide among photographers and cineastes - as well as archival films, at the tradition-rich site in Wolfen.

The recipes of the emulsions, which have matured over decades of experience and date back to the ORWO times of the Filmfabrik Wolfen, are a real treasure at FilmoTec.

Back to topic, one could read more about the perhaps new color film development here:

Good light.

Thanks for the background information on orwo (filmotec).

The link to the magazine you posted was about NC400 and NC500 which are already available in stores. I think Nico was implying that they are making something new and still playing with formulations.
