New i-phones - setting access time

OK - new i-phones specs on paper seem to offer a lot. But that's not my concern - time involved changing settings - are there lots of swipes and menus? FWIW I'm 78 - my main camera is Nikon D7500 and also have an i-phone 8. Even with the latter I find that some time is involved with the touch screen accessing the camera/video icon. I still do overland/backpacking travel in Centra/South America and would like to lighten the load a bit, but not at the expense of a missed shot fussing with settings. My travel lens for the D7500 is 18-200.

Also, FWIW, I just bought a ne 2022 GMC Canyon instead of 2023 because the former has more analogue controls instead of info-touchscreen on the newest ones (electronic parking brake, auto-stop start, touch for lights, radio, air, etc.). I find that all that slows me down, even if my fractions of seconds.

Thanks for your comments.

The experience is not going be all that different as with the 8. However, with either phone the camera is easily accessed from the lockscreen.

Yes - even with my old SE II - I have it set up so that double tap on the back of the phone (even from the lock screen) brings up the camera and then volume up or down takes a photo - no touchscreen needed.

I’m not sure if your (older) iphone has this feature or not but, you can “double tap” on the back of (many) iPhones from the Lock Screen and it will immediately launch the camera app.

you can also press an icon from the Lock Screen to open the camera app and there are 3rd Party camera apps that also have Lock Screen widgets so that pressing them launches the 3rd party camera app.

frankly, it’s very fast if that is something that you need.

as for camera settings, the app on your 8 is likely ‘bout the same as the camera settings in iOS 17. If you don’t like ‘changing settings” on your 8 you probably won’t like in on the 15 either. That said, some apps will “preserve settings” so shot to shot will have the same settings…. Even if you put your phone to sleep and then relaunch the particular camera app. Hope that makes sense.

please do keep in mind that the images that are coming out of iPhone 14s and likely 15s are incredibly better than the ones coming out of your 8.

Another thread about whether to get an iPhone 15 featured a link posted by tonyGN10 to this excellent talk by Scott Kelby. Scott pretends that the talk is about using an iPhone as a second or spare camera. This was clearly intended to attract camera snobs who wouldn’t have attended a talk called “ How to use your iPhone camera - all the tricks you didn’t know.” 40 minutes very well spent, and highly recommended, thanks Tony!

AFAIK, this has to be configured in Settings > Accessibility > Touch> Back Tap.

And, it IS available on an iPhone 8 (or later)

OP, you may wish to enable this feature as above and give it a whirl…. Your 8 will allow you to try it.

your iPhone 8 doesn’t have faceID so it might be a bit awkward at first to fingerprint and then back tap….

good luck!

thats the great thing about it - fingerprint not needed

I had this set on my 13, and had to disable it as I was frequently opening the camera app accidentally.

It might be a difference in the cases we use, or just in how we grip our phones, but I need to use firm, distinct taps in order for them to be recognized. Sometimes I wish it were a little easier. I don’t recall ever accidentally opened either phone app.

I open ReeFlex Pro Camera using two taps and ReeHeld with three. I access the standard Camera app from the Lockscreen.
