hi everybody

i have a very small budget here that can get me nikon zfc with 24 mm or nikon z50 with kit lens (both used like new )

personally i like the z50 ergonomics better

i want sharp pics something that differs from a mobile

i can live with a prime
i will get the bracket thing that attached to zfc coz i hate cameras without grip

i need the camera for family and shooting some action from my vr arcade

so do i really need a camera in your opinion or get a new phone better

i used to own cameras before and all were sold but i do love a sharp image

I personally like the Zfc, and the 24mm f/1.7 DX lens... and the 16-50 kit too.

This will be a touchy subject with strong opinions one way or the other. You get used to the ergonomics, and the Zfc is not a bad setup.

Examples of the results you're getting now might help us answer your question. The Z50 is a great camera, but growing outdated, and the Z30 had better AF features, but no EVF.

It depends on if you're shooting motion. If you're shooting in the dark VR arcade f 1.4-8 glass is the way to go. If you're not shooting motion smartphones have night-mode which uses multiple exposures to take less noisy images handheld. If you're on a budget and need a new smartphone anyway, get a new smartphone.

IMO a DX camera body is more about size and shooting wider (smartphones can stitch more easily/nicely.) or longer focal lengths than a smartphone offers. Good luck!

The Z50 as pointed out is getting old, but the sensor is the same as the newer models and the ergonomics are good. The main limitations of mine (for my use cases) have been lack of power over USB (for long form video - fixed with a dummy battery), record limits and lack of video recording tally light. If you're looking mainly at photos, you won't be bothered by this.

The 16-50 kit lens is excellent. You could find a prime as your only lens very limiting IMHO.

I would also look at the 12-28 pz lens. 16mm for me with the crop factor is often not wide enough.

The Z50 is a great camera and while the kit 16-50 is very sharp, it’s kinda slow. Can you get a Z50 and the 24? Zooms are nice but the speed and 36mm equivalent make the 24 pretty versatile.

Hi!

I have Z5 and Z30. My experience is that kit 16-50 lens is very sharp indeed. So if you prefer Z50 ergonomics, I'd say pick it. If you need to shoot some action or low light, DX Z's still have very good high iso performance...

For taking pictures I prefer a zoom lens, especially for taking pictures of kid running around.

The Z50 maybe 4 years old, but don't be fooled, it still takes excellent pictures.

I had the Z50 and now the Zfc. I much prefer shooting with the Zfc over the Z50. You mileage may vary but its a better ergonomic layout of the controls. The biggest flaw of the Z50 is they placed the EVF zoom-in button right where my thumb goes, so I was always hitting that while trying to shoot, which took me out of the moment and I lost photos. I use the Zfc a ton, more than my Z6ii in fact. It is a great camera and I like the +/- dial where I can quickly adjust exposure (I shoot in Aperture Priority most of the time).

I have the third-party grip for the Zfc but bought a leather half-case for it and use that instead. I like the extra girth the half case gives the camera, and it has a handy door on the bottom when I need to swap batteries or memory cards.

I like the Zfc because I can flip the screen around and leave it closed. I use the EVF for most all my photography.

The Zfc also uses an up to date USB-C charging port, which means you will easily be able to charge the camera with battery installed in case you forget your battery charger. The Z50 uses the older mini-USB port.

The Zfc is a gorgeous camera, and I just want to bring it with me everywhere I go!

The Zfc and 24mm f2.8 prime are a great pair, I would recommend that over the Z50!

Nobody can make this decision for you.

Retro + Prime lens

Standard camera plus kit zoom...

really different options, I feel like you should gravitate towards one or the other.

Myself I have the Zfc with 24mm 1.7 as my grab and go small option and I don't plan on getting any other dx lenses.

OP - The AF differences between the Zfc/Z30 and the old Z 50 are marginal, at best. Go with the one that you feel comfortable with. The 16-50 kit can be obtained right now for little out-of-pocket money. It's the best kit lens Nikon has ever put out.

But if I had to choose one or the other....the Z DX 24mm definitely. It punches well above its weight class.
