My friends tell me I should be shooting wildlife and scenery in RAW. So I've set my cameras to RAW+Jpeg but my editing software doesn't seem to recognize RAW files. My computer seems to import both files to the external hard drive because when I drag one from the external drive to my desktop both the RAW and JPEG files show up... but when I try to import a particular RAW photo to Lightroom it doesn't see it or acknowledge it or doesn't know what to do with it. It sees the JPEG and I can process the JPEG file normally.

Is this a limitation of Lightroom 6 or am I not doing something correctly. My equipment:

Nikon D850 and D500

Lightroom 6

Apple MacBook Air 13" Early 2015

OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6

Thanks for any insight.

More detail is needed
  • What is the actual version NUMBER of your Lr 6???
  • Do both the D850 and D500 have the same problem?
  • What is the error message or other indication that "Lightroom doesn't see it or acknowledge it or doesn't know what to do with it". Please describe in detail, as we cannot see your screen.

Just to add. You don't update software. El Capitan was released in 2015 and so was LR6. The last and final release of LR6 was on December 19, 2017. That was version 6.14.

You cameras were released in 2015 and 2017. dj is asking the correct questions. I'm guessing your version of Lightroom does not have RAW support for either camera.

If you only have Lightroom 6 and a licence key code to get version 6.14 I it may not run on El Capitan.

You should be able to get up Monterey (Big Sur for sure). This will solve your LR 6.14 version issue - if you can get it.

macOS Monterey compatibility

macOS Monterey was made available to download on October 15, 2021, and the most recent version is macOS 12.6.5. The following Macs are compatible with macOS Monterey:
  • MacBook models from early 2016 or later
  • MacBook Air models from early 2015 or later
  • MacBook Pro models from early 2015 or later
  • Mac mini models from 2014 or later
  • iMac from 2015 or later
  • iMac Pro (2017 and later)
  • Mac Pro models from late 2013 and later
  • Mac Studio

Precisely what version of Lightroom 6 are you using? Lightroom 6 does does not support the D850 or D500 until you update to 6.5 for the D500 and 6.13 fore the D850. See https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html.

Thanks everyone. The only info I could find about my version of LR was 6.0 and RAW 9.0

Was able to find and download the Adobe DNG converter. Tried it on a single photo and it worked like a charm to convert and import to LR for editing. I'll play with it and hopefully I can import folders of more than one photo at a time. Cheers !

If you upgrade to Lr 6.14, you won't need the DNG converter. The download link is https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/help/lightroom-6-end-of-support.html

If you try this and your computer won't run 6.14 just update your Operating System. It is free.

While I think I know what you mean, I think the wording could be improved. The operating system upgrade is free, not Lightroom 6.14 is free. You can only use Lr 6.14 (beyond the 7-day free trial period) if you have already purchased a license and have a valid serial number.
