I got my Z9 yesterday and spent today learning to use Auto Capture. What a fantastic, incredible tool! This is one of my main reasons for going ahead with the 9 rather than order and wait on an 8 and see if they add this tool.

Yes, the 9 is big and heavy, compared to my 7 at least, but the Nikon Pro bodies have always felt really nice to my hands and this one is no exception. Loving it!

Glad you are enjoying your z9, it is a cracking camera isn’t it… yes the 7 was small want it.. I could almost fit it in a coat pocket… not so with the 9… but I find the balance and feel of the 9 in my hands better..

the auto capture is absolutely fantastic as you say… and for me, and seemingly you ideal for timid wild life when you can get some pictures you just couldn’t if you were manually operating the camera… it has opened up a whole new set images for me… however I sometimes leave my auto capture for 6 hours or so with wild life… and I find even the z9’s endurance can’t match that so I use a separate power supply via the usb PD connector.

So far everything about this camera is super impressive, but the AF, especially subject detect, is blowing my cookies away. I knew it would be good but I underestimated just how good it is. :)

I really need to work on my NEF processing in Lightroom though. The standard settings are a little too "crunchie" for my taste. But that will come.

That is a good problem to have! Too funny, blowing your cookies away. That is better than tossing your cookies. :)

Try the Neutral pic setting, then build your contrast and saturation from there.

Thanks for the suggestion. I also just installed some Color Fidelity color profiles to try as starting points. I need to find how to change the ACR default sharpening of 40 to something more reasonable. 40 seems over the top.

Process starting with Color Fidelity Portrait color profile and greatly reduced USM in Lightroom. A bit better I think. Comments/suggestions welcomed.

Make sure your import settings use "Camera defaults" rather than "Adobe defaults" for your RAW import. That way you'll start with something much closer to what you see as a preview in the camera.

That 300 3.8 has excellent rendering.
