Am a bit confused...

Using the menu on the camera I see there's a control for Tone. But looking at the owners manual I see one for color and one for b&w. How do they correlate ? What's the best setting for the camera: Off, Mild, or Strong ? I'm usually inclined not to leave things in "auto" mode.

Any help appreciated.

Richard

hello Richard!

I assume that "Tone" is setting one of three Tonal Response Curves, where "Off" is probably linear i.e. no curve.

I dislike anything which messes with what you captured and some tone curves reduce your headroom for later adjustment in your favorite Editor.

My recommendation is to set the camera Tone to 'Off' - unless you prefer to let your camera give you a more tonal image with no need for further adjustment elsewhere.

Hi Ted,

Thank you for your good suggestion.

I look at tone curves just as I think you do. Flat is right. I'll decide on any variation myself.

(The camera can keep its opinions to itself...)

Hope you're staying cool.

Yep, only 98F out there today and the air is working OK!

That setting is for in camera jpeg creation only. It does not affect RAW files.

What's the best setting for the camera: Off, Mild, or Strong ?
There is no best, it depends on the scene. Strong will lift shadows and reduce highlights the most. Useful in scenes with very high contrast, but has side effects (smoothen skin contrast a lot), so I use either off or mild.

Richard,

I use mild all the time, suits me, but I suppose all such settings are a personal thing.

Thank you all for the helpful comments.

Just double checking: If the camera tone control only applies to jpeg files than whatever it's set to won't matter if I'm using just the raw files. Yes?

I don't know about the Quattro but other JPEG settings are passed to SPP and can appear in the Review Adjustments automatically. I don't have SPP6 so can't say for that version, but it wouldn't surprise me if the 'Tone' setting is sent too.

Off

EDIT: To complicate my answer, I keep it off to have less noise in my jpegs, and I believe the camera operates a little slower, when Tone Control is not turned off. I believe using Tone Control drains my battery faster too, though I have not done any tests to try to prove my theory.

I typically have SPP set to use my settings from my previous image Ted (though I may be confusing that with the way I work when using another program).

Thanks. Perhaps Richard will tell us how his is set ...

Ted,

Sorry to be tardy.

I had the camera Tone Control set to "mild", inadvertently.

It's now back to "off". And that's where it'll stay.

Thanks for your input.
