Consider me a Ricoh convert!

I recently bought both a GrIII and GRIIIX and took them on a trip to France. I am still figuring out how to best use them, but I really enjoyed the experience of traveling with these very light cameras, and the image quality is great. There were some times that I wanted to go a little wider and some times that I wanted to get closer, but between the two focal lengths, I covered most of my bases, and the trade-offs were well worth it to have such a minimal setup. So consider me a convert!

Being a Ricoh rookie, I shot raw, staying mostly in aperture priority with highlight-weighted metering. Here are some of the images.

Good job. Ah this takes me back to when i took a trip to France in 2016 with my GR. Was soo liberating and came away with some great photos and memories. One day i will have to go back with my GRIII.

Yes there are times when you need wider and i can recommend the wide angle convertor but with 2 cameras and the convertors you may find you cant be bothered messing with it ;) Although if i went back id take mine for sure :)

What town or area is this?

Most of these are in Alsace: Eguisheim, Colmar, Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé. (There are obviously a few Paris shots mixed in.) It is a beautiful area!

Nice shots! I’m a recent convert as well! I sold all of my other gear when I realised how much easier it was to carry when travelling and cycling with my young daughter and wife. Didn’t lose any IQ compared to my Fujifilm kit either and don’t really miss the viewfinder!
I am also coming from Fujifilm, which I always thought was a minimalist kit until now. I will still hang on to a Fuji body and a few lenses for things the Ricoh's aren't great at (like shallow depth of field portraits), but for a travel and on-the-go setup, I am fully in on the Ricohs.

There were a few times I missed the viewfinders, mostly in really bright light where it was hard to see, especially where I was shooting highlight-weighted metering, which can make for a really dark preview. But I worked it out and had a great time doing it!

Same sentiments, but even the Fujifilm X-S10 viewfinder was hard to see in bright light and I just duck into the shadows for a moment to check my exposure! If a future X100 series camera has image stabilisation and my daughter is a bit older I may be tempted by that, but for now the GRIIIx fits my needs perfectly! And by that time there may be a new Ricoh update!

I don't know why, but I just love those narrow street images either with or without people. Its always interesting so see where other live and work.

Thank you for posting.

Great set of photos, all of them. I especially like the second one! Why, because I took exactly the same photo as you did standing in the same spot 13 years ago! Alsace is just wonderful, both France and Germany! The photo with the storks was also a giveaway for me!

I am a sucker for narrow street images. They are so fun to shoot!

Thank you for your kind words! I'm so glad you took a similar photo! I'd love to see it!

This was my first visit to Alsace, but it definitely won't be the last. :)

Yes, I'm curious about what the GRIV might have up its sleeve!

There are so many beautiful places to see in France that I have not been back to Alsace. I always carried small cameras because in the those years I was backpacking a lot in the Pyrénées.

This is the photo I took back then. Thanks for asking to see it!

Cheers!

Love my GR and Fuji Xf10. But there's something satisfying about holding an X-H1 for example with its beautiful grip. Heavy and bulky compared to my smaller two APS-Cs.

I love both, the heft and the lightness.

Love being able to switch.
