Hello everybody ! I can't decide for a body:
In my country, right now, i have some deals for :
Canon EOS R8 w/ 50mm F/1.8 -brand new with warranty from an official store - $ 2150
Canon EOS R6 Mk1 -brand new with warranty from an official store - $ 2160
Canon EOS R6 Mk2 - brand new with warranty from an official store - $ 3030
Canon EOS R5
- used <125000 shutter count with the official battery grip - $ 3040 ..
I want to shoot mostly wildlife and portraits, ocassionally i'm gonna do some events/parties. I know from the R8 to the R6 mkII/ used R5 is a $1000 difference, but if it's gonna worth it, i'm gonna save a little more. Now i have $2500.
Which is the best body in this price ? What is a good glass under $2000 for wildlife ? Even if that it's gonna be an used one in that price.
Many thanks in advance !

I have the R5, R6, R6ii, and R7 (no R8 tho). If you were just doing wildlife, I’d say go for the R5. However for events, the additional autofocus selectivity that the R6ii provides is almost essential for people-shooting, IME.

The R8 also has these AF features, but the body would be a notch down from both the R6ii and R5 in several important areas (IBIS, readout speed, etc). It’d make a heck of a portrait shooter though.

The most versatile wildlife lens (short of the excellent 100-500, which I use) would be the EF 100-400ii +/- 1.4x iii. I just recently sold my own EF combo actually. After that would be the RF 100-400 +/- 1.4x, which a lot of people really like (I’ve never owned it).

I’d HIGHLY recommend also investing in a really good (RAW) noise reduction program such as (my fave) DxO Photolab 6. This will help with the higher ISOs that are often forced upon you by the smaller apertures in use nowadays.

Best of luck in your quest!

Thanks sir !

So, the best option is to spend that 1 grand for a R6 mkii or an used R5 ?

I was looking for a Sigma 150-600 C EF, but as far as i know, there are problems with breathing autofocus. Is that right ?

Also, i received an offer from a guy with a 500mm F4 L IS Mki, for about $3300, with all the accessories included... will this old lens work well with the new autofocus ?

Thanks!

Breathing is only a real problem for video, unless you're very tightly framed right at one or other end of the zoom and can't shift slightly. It's very visible and annoying if you refocus in the middle of a video scene, but only a tiny inconvenience for stills photography with a zoom lens.

Definitely the R6ii. I really like the updated firmware and operation (over the R5).

You might miss a bit of the R5's resolution tho (esp going full frame), but it all depends on your output requirements (and how much you crop).

I haven't shot the 150-600 on any of the R bodies. I've heard stories of the "pulsing" AF issue though.

On DSLRs, I much preferred the Canon EF 100-400ii (+/- 1.4x iii) over the 150-600 crop of zooms. My copy of the 100-400 was sharper than the 150-600's at the long end anyways. Plus the big zooms were a fair amount heavier than the Canon.

The physical size of the lens will dictate what you can and cannot shoot. It's a beast. The bokeh is delish, but there are many other sacrifices that have to be made in order to get there.

I much prefer the RF 100-500 (+/- 1.4x) for my type of shooting (mostly hikes/travel). It's an extremely versatile lens (just the opposite of the 500 actually). The zoom can't reproduce the character of the big prime however.

I think this is the lens that Chelsea Northrup originally mounted on the R5 when the R5 made its debut. She had some issues IIRC. But you'll have to dig around for more info. If my old EF 400 f/5.6L is any indication, the R bodies might (at least) limit the framerate and restrict the AF area. Search for more info tho.

Best of luck to you!

I would stay clear of a R5 for that price with 125000 shutter clicks - it is though the best wildlife option IMHO

it all depends with the low mp ff bodies how close you get - 24 mp is more than enough until you need to crop out the centre of frame. Hence why I went APSC cameras as back up for my R5

Depends on which you do more of, wildlife or portraits. That R5 is too expensive for having that much use. You can get a new one in the U.S. for a few hundred more these day -- I realize you are not in the U.S., it's just a reference point.

If wildlife is your main thing then take a look at the R7 and RF 100-400. Personally, as a wildlife shooter I avoid lower MP bodies because I don't have a 1200mm lens and sometimes I need to do big crops which wouldn't leave much detail starting with a 20-24mp file.

Also, again, personally, I'm not a fan of the R8. It's like a neutered thoroughbred with what Canon did with its backside buttons. I think it is a great "beginner" camera, maybe that's what you are looking for, I don't know, but If you have been shooting for awhile you may get frustrated with the reduced # of programmable buttons, especially for wildlife.

I would not recommend a 500 mark 1 for that price. very nice lens but Canon no longer maintains. AF could be a bit slow but should work. these are 10-20 years old now and well built will not last forever- and $3300 is a good amount of money
