Some setting probably, but anyone know why even when doing moderate speed pans in photo mode (fast shutter speeds 1600 and up) that it looks like it's running 20fps not 60fps? Like things smudge? Seems to be fine inside from memory. I note this is meant to be 60fps or 120fps but both look slow to me nothing like when my phone is at 60fps and it looks smooth.

Have you turned on setting a19 - High fps viewfinder display? If not, turn it on and see if that helps.

I have noticed this as well, but for me it seems to be at times when I'm just pulling the camera up to my eye from it being around my neck or on a Spider-Holster. Pressing AF-ON / focus seems to bring my viewfinder back to 120hz.

Some sort of odd battery-saving feature perhaps? No one else seems to have mentioned this 'bug' or 'feature', but I'm glad I'm not alone, at least.

It's odd it feels like it is working at 14hertz or something like really blurry. I also notices it change but I thought it was always at least 60. This was deffo lower than 60! Think it could be a bug.

Yes and it doesn't. 60hz shouldn't look this bad though. 60 on a phone is smooth on moderate pans. Buildings are blurring as I scroll past them fairly slowly...

I don't own a Z8, so I can't comment about its specifics but in general, panning faster than one pixel per frame results in a perceived blur when the subject is static. Since Z8 has EVF with horizontal resolution of 1280 pixel, panning faster than 21 seconds per image width will result in some blur at 60 fps. Usually, blurring is not that bad up to double of that speed but it gets noticeable after that.

It's not that because sometimes it's smooth as silk.

Do you have starlight mode on? Is VR in sports mode?

Have you tried turning energy saving mode and D8 preview exposure OFF?

Ok. Next thought - could it perhaps be the VR causing it? Have you tried turning VR off to see if that resolves it?

No to starlight. Will check vr mode soon.

d8 ;)

I checked my Z8 (set to run at 120 fps), by doing continuous panning back and forth. It appears that if you do not touch any buttons for 11 seconds it switches to a low refresh rate. Doing a half press of shutter button (even if shutter button is disabled for focus) or pressing AF-ON button switches it back to 120 fps.

d8 makes no difference for me.

Must be a battery saving "feature."

This might be it I'll test.

So here's something interesting - if I change c3 Standby Timer from default 30 seconds to 1 minute, then it switches to the low refresh rate after about 40 seconds (i.e. 20 seconds before Standby Timer expires?)

Perhaps this is a solution: just increase Standby Timer

Correct the camera is going into a power Dave nice and the EVF so hey lady and choppy Anna then fun then eventually go dark for a semi sleep mode.

Totally normal

The display refresh rate may drop about 20 seconds before the standby timer turns off. The length of time before the standby timer expires automatically can be selected using Custom Setting c3

OK good find. Or good manual memorization!
