I have always been confused about the differences between these two modes on the G9. I think with the SH1 preburst you can get both RAW and JPGs if you want but with 6K Preburst you get essentially you get a short video clip that you scroll through and choose "frames" which can then be extracted in camera to jpegs only. Both record for a short period before you depress the shutter button. I use back button autofocus which I believe starts the process

1) I find I sometimes copy all the files into Lightroom without 1st extracting the 6k preburst frames I want. Is there a way to do this in LR from the MP4 file?

2) With the 6K photo preburst, my impression is that you get quite a few more images from the time before you depress the shutter button and maybe only one or two prefire shots with the SH1 preburst. Anyone know if this is correct?

3) Which do you guys use and why?

I meant to attach a few shots I got while experimenting with these modes. I never would have gotten these shots without the preburst functionality! This is one of the big advantages of the G9 and some of the Olympus bodies over my FF Sony system for bird photography.

On simple explanation, SH is regular burst of still shooting, so it is frame by frame and in RAW/JPG. This require a very file writing and deep buffer so only found on high spec models. Similar to pro capture of Olympus.

4K/6K Photo mode is making use of the video technology (30fps or faster, video format etc) for high speed shooting. Therefore it has my h smaller concerns on buffer size, file writing speed and so even lower spec model can enjoy the fun. Shortage: JpG only and not in full resolution. Even my entry class GX850 has it.

Not sure on G9, but 4K Photo mode Pre Burst of my cameras start recording (no file saving until I hit the shutter to fire) at the moment I select the feature. So I would select it around the time I need to shoot, otherwise tgus will eat up my battery very fast.

Use a video player. VLC or MPC etc could do the extraction. I also use the free VIDEO TO JPG CONVERTER but not sure could it support 6K footage.

Not sure on SH as my lower end GOT and GX85 do not support it. The idea of 4K photo preburst is the cam will start recording at the time of selection of the feature @30fps, the footage will be on a rolling stock basis of 30 frames (1" long footage). The new frame will replace the old until you hit the shutter. The cam will then save the 1" footage before hitting of shutter plus 1" longer. So we have total 2" footage of 60 frames.

3) Which do you guys use and why?
As per our BIF expert Trevor Capanter, he found SH is better (same fps but in RAW & full resolution) for the task and could eliminate the step of extraction.

My cameras cannot do SH. For situations which I expect will be happened soon, I would use 4K photo Preburst. E.g. shot my friends slipping on a sliding rope downhill, blowing candle in birthday party etc... For BIF taking off or landing, catching insect, bursting of balloon, water droplet shooting etc should also be perfect for pre burst.

Yes, the SH1 has several settings, one of which is preburst which does seem to work like the Olympus ProCapture. I am not sure with the G9, how many images you get from the time before you fire the shutter. With the 6k photo mode as you scroll through the video it shows you when you fired the camera, which I like. With the SH1 preburst you get a series of RAW plus JPEG images but I don't see any indication of when each frame was acquired relative to depressing the shutter release

For birds actually in flight I find the standard SH1 without preburst seems to work best for me. The G9 autofocus takes awhile to acquire focus on a BIF so the preburst just results in lots of additional out of focus images. Where I find the SH1 preburst and the 6k photo most useful is catching birds just as they take off
