Hi all

Recently I known A7III has option to ISO 50.

Are there any improve image quality and benefit use ISO 50 than ISO 100 ?

Thank

I would use this if I had no ND filter with me and needed to slow my shutter more. If anything it will degrade quality a little loosing information in the highlights

It's an "expanded ISO" - not a real one. It's pretty much an over-exposed ISO 100. You'll lose maybe a stop of dynamic range, and there is a bit of a risk of losing some highlights.

I prefer not to use it - you can set your minimum ISO to 100 to avoid using it.

ISO 50 is a so-called 'fake' ISO which basically at ISO 100 overexposed one stop and then dial back. It has a slight advantage in lifting shadow but at price of highlight clipping. Usually you don't use it in normal shooting tasks such as landscape etc.

But it's very useful in panning under very slow shutter (such as below /100) while under bright sunlight on prop-driven planes in airshow or motorsports to cause a blurry look on propellers and wheels etc. Otherwise at ISO 100, your aperture easily exceed F13 that causes more issues - softness from diffraction and dusts amplified significantly where highlight usually not an issue. But unfortunately ISO 50 cannot be part of auto-ISO range in all Sony cameras so far. It's so easy to implement but Sony doesn't bother while Canon and Nikon did decade ago. Just because of that, I used to have to assign to 2 different dial settings - 1 for panning and 2 for regular in airshow events. Really hope Sony added such option while you still can set min and max ISO in ISO range. But check how long it took Sony to add lossless compressed RAW and update FW via a card (that both Canon and Nikon did decade ago) ? ;-)

You can have the same gain as the gains you would have by using the ETTR technic.

So the resulting image will be cleaner, but you have to pay attention to not blow out hightlights.

You do NOT loose dynamic range, this is the same dynamic range as ISO100.
