Anyone with experience with selling/trading to MPB.com. Used their site to get a Sell quote for a Nikon Z 24-200. Came back at $400, which is actually about $75 - $100 more than I had been quoted by the local store and KEH. Just wondering if people get talked down on their original offer (ie. they find something wrong and offer a lower rate, once you send it in). I'm just a bit suspicious why this is significantly higher and more importantly, if I 'll end up at roughly the same number in the end as I got with KEH and the local store (which ranged from $300 to $325) but with more work involved.

NOTE: If I don't reply to a direct comment in the forums, it's likely I unsubscribed from the thread/article..

I sold several lenses to their US store a few months ago in 2 separate groups, they honored all of the conditions & quoted prices, the payments were made by deposit to my bank in a couple of days. One lens was defective, I didn't realize there was a problem with the mount, they paid for the return of this lens. Overall both transactions went very well.

Cheers,
Doug

There are numerous threads if youd prefer to search instead of getting the same responses over again.

The summary from these threads is generally:

MPB offers the best price compared to other second hand dealers.

They offer free returns if you dont agree with their assessments.

They generally match if not uptier what they quote. (This was my case, they upped my gear from good to excellent and paid more).

I have sold to MPB in the UK without any problems. I would suggest under rating your equipment rather than assuming it is as good as you think. They also buy faulty equipment that they can sell for spares or repair which can be useful.

Yes, I’ve sold to MPB. I got, I believe, $400 more from them over KEH. I got the same amount as in the quote which was quickly deposited in my account.

I had one time that they downgraded a lens I sent in. But the downgrade was pretty minor and the lens was one I just bought as part of a kit at a pawn shop so I knew nothing of its condition. They said it squeaked as it focused and I am hearing impaired especially concerning high pitched sounds, so would likely not have heard it if it was squeaking. Price was $30 less. But it was part of a larger package that the overall offer was quite a bit higher than I expected anyway and more than I had invested in the stuff that I just went ahead with the deal. As others have said, I could have had them send it back to me without charge, but in this case was not worth it.

The other part about MPB is to watch their pricing. On the deal mentioned above, I was trading these items for a Nikon Z lens which was in stock when I asked for the quote, but by the time I got my official quote back and responded with my OK the lens had been sold so they no longer had one. I checked around and found that Nikon had a 10% off sale going on for their refurbished lenses and so I took the cash offer from MPB, and bought the lens from Nikon for $40 less than MPB wanted for the used one.

I got a quote from them and sent in my gear. They dropped the price about 40% as I recall claiming some issues I know the gear did not have. I knew that gear inside and out. I sent photographs to confirm. They sent back vague photographs that did not show anything. They had my gear and my only option was to have them send it back to and then to start the process all over again somewhere else. I think they counted on me not wanting to deal with it.

In the end I buckled and took the new offer but I'll never buy from or sell to them again. Mostly it was the way they handled the entire exchange and I felt really taken advantage of.

Lots of other people have had good experiences. I hope you do too.

Well, I haven't decided yet. On the one hand, whiel the local camera shop is lower, if I'm buying something else, which I may, that may increase the trade-in value so I might try that first, then try MBP second and KEH last (although KEH was the lowest at about $240 for some reason which I would just keep the lens at that point).

I should add that my experience was in Europe. I don't have any experience with them in the U.S. When I lived in the U.S. I enjoyed dealing with my local camera shop. Its nice to have that relationship. Where I live now there really aren't any brick and mortar camera stores so I gave MPB a try.

Yeah I'm probably going to just deal with the local shop at this point. They came up to about $360 which is only about $45 less than MPB is offering, but the good thing is that they (the local shop) already looked at the lens so I know what I can get for it. But that's only if am buying something else, but I have some time (a few weeks) as they said the offer would remain for about 30 days.

I’m not completely positive but I think if you’re trading (and let them know what you want to trade for), they keep the wanted item aside. Something to ask.

...wouldn't hesitate to use them again either (I'm in the US).

Had them up their amount following receiving my stuff once.

Have never actually traded with them - they never had anything I wanted at the time of the trade.

I used them a few times selling off gear....quotes were paid ontime...free FedEx shipping with tracking...no hassels...what's not to like.

I've done around six sells or trades with them, always being offered a higher quote than from KEH, with the price honored all but one time. And then the difference was only ten dollars lower. They pay swiftly, directly into my bank account. I highly recommend them.

The trade was more for the local store, not MPB. For MPB I would just want the cash. But i will ask the local store. I might try to bundle it and trade my Z6 II and the lens in question (the 24-200) for a Z8 as that should pay for about 1/3 of the Z8.

Usually good price, but sometimes just better to sell elsewhere. For instance, I thought trade-in would get a better quote but that’s not the case.

I bought a lens from MPB and traded it in 6 months after, excellent in original case (I hardly used it, thus trading in), and they offered me half of the original price. When I contacted MPB, they replied the prices had decreased on those types of lens. A day after trading it in, it was again for sale with the original price (actually a bit more expensive than I originally bought from them).

And this was a trade in, so they had more leeway with pricing.

Otherwise, they offer lens with very competitive prices and good quality. Just use their quote system to get an idea and don’t commit before researching alternatives.

It was a 4 month long nightmare. In the end I paid even more money for a more used body and they pulled the warranty.

Yes, in the UK. Ive used them about 3-4 times.... I would say mostly positive, my only issue is their ratings of the equipment... so for example some "well used" looks better than the "good" ones etc.... and their judgment on equipment is very random sometimes when selling..

But i would recommend them still, they are upfront and you can always so no...

Just go out and shoot photos!!!!

I did plenty homework before doing it, but I am happy with them. I considered B&H, KEH, and eBay. Yes, eBay probably would have gotten me the most money, but that would have come with a big hassle.

I sold my X-T4, 7 lenses, accessories, and a compact camera to mpb.com earlier this week. They ended up giving me +$500 more than quoted because many of my items were in better condition (Excellent vs Good) than I listed. I shipped them the box on Monday, they received it Tuesday. Wednesday I got an email asking me to approve the new (higher) quote. I approved it Wednesday. Money showed up this morning in my account.

100% would do it again.
