As a reminder, this is what was stated:

https://www.dpreview.com/data-download

"You can request a download of all the photos and text you’ve uploaded to the site."

I made my request on 3/24, and I just got the email from DPR with a link to download my data. The downloaded ZIP file is 8.5MB. The unzipped contents total 34MB. These are the files:

44fd1e71668942888330ee7e069f35d2.jpg

I checked all the files with Notepad. My entire posting history appears to be complete (up through 3/24). If I quoted previous posts within my own, the quoted text has been retained. That's all as expected.

But it's immediately obvious that there are no photos in this collection.

I don't understand: your gallery seems empty [now?]
My gallery has always been empty. However, I have uploaded to the site hundreds of photos embedded in forum posts. The links to the images I personally posted in DPR (and also the ones I did not personally post) within threads are included in the forum-posts text, so I could download them one at a time as long as the site remains up for reading ... but it would be highly impractical.

ah, I see. I had read their statement as pertaining to the galleries only.

So they give you only the bare text of the posts

The same happened to me. So much for the promise to return all photos used. What is worse is that there is no info on what will happen to these photos.

I read somewhere that Amazon actually own them, so they might sell them to an AI company?

Found it in the legal section,

‘With respect to photographic content that you submit or make available for inclusion, you grant us a nonexclusive, royalty-free right to use, distribute, reproduce, publicly perform, and to publicly display such content on the Web Site or any of our affiliates web sites or mobile applications.’

Same here. I actually tried to use one of the img urls from the json file and they don’t work due to authentication problems (didn’t bother to investigate). Only the links to the actual posts work and they do show the photos. But as you said kinda impractical and not quite as advertised.

As there will be no DPR web site or DPR affiliate web sites or mobile applications after the 10th...no need to worry about their use.

Father down in the link it also details how the member retains copyright and such ... I think

Long rant about tying up loose legal ends (sorry) ...

The issue is with pics we uploaded to DPR through the years. I doubt the TOS would actually hold up in court anyway - but I've always placed a © on every pic I've ever posted on DPR that I have clear copyright ownership rights to. We certainly uploaded content before newer TOS were imposed on us without our consent. Our content was already there with no ability to delete it. The new owners bought everything lock stock and barrel from Phil.

Whether AMZN seeks to monetize content generated by posters on DPR is really an open legal question. The TOS was likely implemented to allow DPR to actually allow content to be visibly available on-line while they existed.

"Affiliate" could be anyone that AMZN decides to sell content/metrics/IDs etc. to ...

Real lawyers may disagree - the idea that DPR will not be publicly available after April 10th doesn't mean it's not continuing to exist and be monetized into the future by AMZN. $$$ talk loudest these days lol.

My © notice is about proving deliberate intent to violate my asserted copyright by eliminating my copyright notice. I have already seen "Fair Use" violations but they weren't egregious enough to pursue legally. The bulk of DPR users aren't pros so they don't really care about copyright and love to see their pics "valued" by anyone.

Actual IP lawyers would be helpful interpreting these issues - but DPR has never encouraged actual expert opinion while encouraging/enabling armchair amateurs' opining - shrug

I downloaded my "data" and got back three zip files that contain my ID data, my PMs, and my posts (text without pics). Maybe our pics will actually cease to exist lol. Who knows at this point?

After it all settles down (sayin mid-April), some of us may care about how the shut-down of DPR was handled -legal fingers will be pointed lol

I'd ask the remaining DPR workers to allow us an option to delete all of our data associated with our activities on DPR if we choose to close our accounts. I have all my pics on backup HDs so I personally don't need my own pics in the "Download Your Data" option - but there likely are some folks that would want their pics.

Thanks to the 13 folks that were still working here at the end !!!

AMZN could've treated y'all better,

Ed

Yes and after the 10th...no one will be accessing them though/by DPR or the parent company. So no copyright issue in their use after the 10th in that context.

No as I think they are referring to the old DPR Shopping site and the DPR mobile site when the say affiliate web sites.

Not an issue if that which contains the copyright notice can no longer be accessed after the shut down?

How would you know it was really deleted? What if some nefarious person steals the hard drives and recovers the deleted files anyways. Sounds silly right. I'd be more worried about folks that already "shared" the photos you posted outside of DPR. After all...you posted this most excellent shot....(just a copy from your post)

Nothing prevented some one from downloading it but at Least DPR and it's affiliates won't use it other than in the post you placed it. From personal experience...they really took/take your copyright seriously, IMO and would go to court to back you up in a claim if someone violated it

My opinions are my own and not those of DPR or its administration. They carry no 'special' value (except to me and Lacie of course)

Still no link received weeks' later what is happening?

FWIW, I got all my inline images over the course of several hours leveraging some software I wrote for the purpose (and a lot of manual work).

Also FWIW, I don't think Amazon is going to do anything with the site content including our contributions but you can't put that toothpaste back in the tube given places like archive.org..

Won't lots of entities be able to access the site after the 10th? See below.

'The site will be locked, with no further updates made after April 10th 2023. The site will be available in read-only mode for a limited period afterwards.'

During that limited period, it's presumed that text and images will remain accessible.

Yes...just as they are now (and would have been had DPR not shut down)...for a limited time. At least then (after the limited time) folks need not worry about the things they uploaded to the net here still being accessible. Personally... I'd be honored if somebody thought my images here worth stealing. Careful what I upload...as I always assume it will get stolen. That said...certainly understand folks concerns.

Helllooo. Any ideas why dpreview aren't giving me the link to the data?
My guess is so many requests and few folks. May need manual input from a real person that takes time. Not sure

I'm sure it's an (almost?) automatic process but it takes time and there may be server load constraints.

Mine took 7 days to complete..

You can actually delete images from your gallery [even in batch]

Thanks for an interesting reply

I requested it day the info broke. Yet some got theirs the next day? They also don't respond to any messages I've sent but some get a response next day. I'd have thought as a mod ud have a direct line at least.
Have you checked your Spam / Junk folder?
That's where my request acknowledgement ended up.
