If You Ever Wanted to Say It, Say It Now!

I just joined the GR User Forum but haven't even had time yet to look at their site.

I registered with the same user name I'm using here: joslocum

I'll miss the give and take. Specifically on the Ricoh forum I was never been offended by the dust discussions because the problem exists. I prefer using an EVF but purchased my Ricohs knowing full well they didn't have them. I made a choice when buying. I view a "slip on" EVF as a better version of an OVF. If Ricoh develops one in the future I would be pleased. Those that don't care could skip it. I own many cameras and would change something about every (!) one of them. No big deal. I never tried to change anyone else's mind but instead simply stated what works for me. Things go south when you try to change someone else's opinion.

Over the years on DPR I have posted a friendly reply to a great many reply posts (to me) that goes "we don't agree but such is the nature of forums". I try to read each post without adding some imaginary "tone" to it but sadly some clearly are meant to be nasty.

I do believe many are too defensive or sensitive about their gear or favorite brand. I LOVE my older Leica X Vario. Anybody can say it is terrible and they hate it and it doesn't bother me.

This one point below I am certain of. This is where most forum discussions break down on any forum I have ever been on...music, politics, cars, cameras, anything really:

1. poster A posts a comment about music, politics , a car...a camera.

2. poster B then posts a comment about poster A. Not about music, politics, cars or a camera.

I was very keen on that initially, but not so much as of late. It feels too forced and so far there doesn't seem to be much activity.
I will probably check it out more after DPR closes on the 10th.

In the meantime, and with less than two weeks left, I hope there's a consensus of where all the GR users are going to land.

I am mostly interested in GR chat and news about any upcoming GR models, etc.

I click on the GR Blog once in a while but not much. It seems more Japanese-centric than any useful technical info.

I'm not sure about the Ricoh forum but it's been said that the DPR forums are just a bunch of grumpy old retired people with too much time on their hands for endless complaining. And of course everyone's right about their topic and everyone else is wrong. ;)

I can take a punch and maybe have given one here and there. And if I'm wrong I'll readily admit it. But as a newer GR user I've gained more information than I've provided, for sure. Many of you guys are sage gurus when it comes to using the GR and have been thru every model and rendition since the beginning.

I'm still not completely comfortable with Snap Focus but I also have not been out shooting that much since it's just over winter where I live.

Statistics claim tht 50% of dpr visitors are in the range 25-44 years old. But that's general site usage, not forum posters.

22 and 44 are extremely different, other than being palindromes.

Ok, so I grouped them into one figure, as they are clearly not the grumpy retirement age that @joslocum was referring to

25-34 = 29%

35-44 = 21%

45-54 = 14%

55-64 = 10%

It would be my guess that GR users are generally younger, on average, than those waxing in the Open Forum or Nikon or Leica.

Dear god, I forgot the most important thing that bugs me regarding the GR cameras.

I just can't stand it when people call it a GR11 or 111. Three and a hundred and eleven are different numbers.

How do you feel about GRii or GRiii?

Then when the next one comes out all hell will break lose!

GRIV...or...GRIIII...or...GR1111...or...GRiiii...or griiii...

But of course that will probably be after DPR shuts its doors so...

Well, all good things come to an end I guess. I'm liking DPRevived and micro43.org, so will most likely land there.

Hope the people from DPReview do well as their careers move in a new direction. But they are talented so they will land on their feet. Everyone changes jobs and/or careers at some point.

I just posted over on DPRevived. Lots of gratitude for the owners and developers of these two sites. It's a lot of work. Hope things stay positive as we share photos and our knowledge of our respective cameras as I know a lot of people are on more than one system.

Cheers!

You should have been on the Pentax forum when the K-3iii came out and some were referring to it as the K33. Ouch! :-)

That's fine.

Maybe i could accept the GRIIII though it's daft.

How about converting 'GRiiix' from roman to hindu-arabic numerals? Would that help? :)

'GR three-ten' ?

or is 'iiix' actually an unorthodox way of writing 'vii' or, in hindu-arabic, '7'?

It's like counting trees in the forest. When people want to know how many pines there are and someone responds with the number of oaks as if there is a correlation.

I'll stick with my original statement. And to be honest, the people who have the time to spend endless hours on forums are usually retired people or the unemployed.

Where do these age groupings come from? This is not what was observed on a very active M43 poll taken last year which broke down age by decade. The vast majority responded that they were in their sixties and seventies. If they commented they often said they were late sixties or early seventies and retired. There were a few in their 80's and on the other end of the bell curve it decreased to almost noone in their 20's. I couldn't find the poll or thread doing a search. DPReview appears to be a place with more retired people. Maybe I'm wrong, regarding the Sony, Canon, and Nikon, and SLR forums. I don't spend any time there.

I set up a folder that has nine photography forums, just to know what is out there. There is no way I will spend the time looking at all of them, though. I've narrowed it down to four to watch for now and two to participate.

The timing of DPReview closing comes at a time when the March weather is not all that great, so it's easy to spend more time at a pc. It's a rainy day, so not much happening.

I'll be in and out of forums mostly based on what else I'm doing. I was pretty much away all of December and January as I was travelling, so simply had no time other than to take a look over a cup of coffee in the morning. I do lurk a lot as taking the time to respond takes more of a commitment.

DPRevived is working out the kinks and at the moment appears to be attracting certain groups. It will remain to be seen if it continues to attract new members and if they remain active.

I like your idea of the folder for photography forums. I should probably bring myself up to snuff here on recommended forums before it closes in less than a week and a half.

The one thing I like about DPR is that it tended to be all things to all people. They basically tried to cover all topics, brands, and reviews with a small staff. I also liked that they had any number of forums inc. PC, Mac, etc. While adding forums is fairly easy moderating them is time-consuming. So every time they added a forum it adds another forum that requires moderation. I did also like the Photo Challenges but was not always in agreement with the winning photo, however, some were fantastic!
