A7SIII IBIS malfunction

Hi,

so I have some IBIS malfunction on my A7SIII ( ILCE-7SM3 ). It creates some small shakes, especially noticeable on the longer side of lenses. It almost feels as the IBIS is not kicking in at all.

Though when I switch the manual IS switch on and and off, the image zooms in and out, so the camera notices that it has to do "something".

I sent the camera into the service center that is recommended by Sony ( here in Belgium, where I live right now, it doesn't have its own ).

They first tested it via a software/hardware test, told me it is ok now and that they re calibrated the system and it should be good now. I got it back and it was the same problem

I send it back and this time they said they could install a new IBIS unit, which they did. But this hasn't solved anything either. I tested it next to another A7SIII, a A1 and a FX3. The A1 and the FX3 of course worked exactly as expected, just the A7SIII is not working well. The lens I used for testing on all cameras is the Sony 24-105 F4 G ( on latest firmware). Though the problem can be reproduced with almost any setup. It is not that I am not sure if there is a problem, when you look at the video, obviously there is one.

I don't remember when the malfunction happened as I use the camera as my b-cam and therefore don't use it that much on a daily basis. I just noticed one day when I started to work with it, that the tele shots where all far more shaky.

The same happens with the std stabilization setting, but with the Active IS it is just so much more pronounced as the function should be so much more obvious.

I have attached a video with the comparison between the malfunctioning A7SIII and the working one. Maybe someone has encountered something similar and has an idea what exactly is going on as I might be able to point that out to the "service" as they don't seem to be able to pinpoint the problem.

Cheers,

Marc

Hello Marc,

It seems I am having the exact same problem with my sony A7SIII.

Did you manage to solve the issue?

Best,

TH

Would someone post which lens they are using?

I believe it is user error. You probably don't have the right setting.

It is mainly the Sony 28-105 F4. But it also appears on other lenses.

Same lens on A1 or FX3 doesn't produce similar results and the IBIS is smooth and how you would expect it to work.

I work with Alphas and FX cameras professionally for about 10 years, so I would assume I have my knowledge of the workage of the camera down.

Funny enough, when I switch to manual focal lens setting in the IBIS sub menu, it seems to improve a little. But at some point it struggles again. It almost seems that maybe the communication between the lens and the IBIS is causing the issue.

I would suggest you to seek help from Sony's repair technicians. It sounds very dangerously similar to a case of my friend's A7M4's IBIS failure, where it eventually turned out to be a mechanical issue.
