Looks soft

I've tried to love the lens, but every time it is a miss. The pictures at 100% look soft. I think this is the worst performing lens I have of Sony. It looks like they try to crop in the 24mm to make it a 35mm and the pictures look fine at 67%, but it makes my 50MP sensor look like a 24MP one.

I don't like the bokeh. Can be due to the fact I'm shooting at 1/3200 silently (that's a Sony thing right?)

This is my first time using a 35mm, so maybe I have to get use to it, but I still find it strange.

It's hard to tell what issue you may be running into off that single image, but my 35GM is anything but soft, it's sharper at f2 than some of my slower primes wide open and at least as sharp at f1.4 as those slower ones are wide open... It's my only f1.4 tho. Sony is definitely not cropping all the way from 24mm to 35mm via corrections, that's ludicrous (no offense).

As for bokeh rendering with e-shutter, it should be the same as with the mechanical shutter (on any camera), unless there's flickering lights. Perhaps you're thinking of electronic first curtain shutter? That's also not a Sony thing, any camera using EFC with a really fast lens might experience worse OOF rendering, the answer is to use an ND there instead of going to EFC at really fast SS...

It's all kinda moot on an A1 tho, you should be fine with e-shutter on that body. What lens are you comparing with that you think ends up looking much sharper? You run some basic test on your 35GM to rule out any sample issues? (Google upside down or four corners test)

My 24, 50, 85mm all look sharper. I even looked the sample gallery and I see the same issue over there, so it probably isn't a lens issue.

I first noticed the issue shooting in a somewhat darker place at ISO 500. But even at ISO 100 it is a mess. I've had a similar issue with my Laowa 12mm, but that is not a GM lens, so I'm disappointed with quality to say the least.

My 35mm F1.4 GM is one of my favorites in my camera arsenal of lenses.

I bought a used copy that I returned just before the one month return period. I too, not only wanted to like it, I assumed I would like it. Maybe I got a bad sample. but I also felt it was a bit heavy and big and not worth the price/performance. After trying the Sigma 35/2 DG DN and the Samyang 35/1.8 simultaneously, I ended up with the Samyang which I'm very happy with.

After learning about it here on the forum, and doing some research, I also got the Voigtlander 35/2 APO-Lanthar. If you're OK with MF, it's an outstanding lens and my best 35mm.

when shooting faster than 1/1000 make sure silent mode is off.

Also can you confirm that the image sharpness is bad also when shooting with silent mode on and off?

were you shooting in burst mode? what is the max shutter speed in silent mode for the a1?

I use the same settings with my other lenses and don't have any issues there.

I think that the same picture frame using the 50mm 1.2 will be sharper than the 35mm.

To protect the background rendering? That's a concern with EFCS and not silent/e-shutter, and banding or rolling shutter would impact e-shutter at any SS but it shouldn't be as big a concern with the A1.

Mine is sharp and awesome. Maybe try shooting with different settings/scenarios. If you still don't like it, get rid of it and someone else will love it :P

rent a copy of the 35mm GM and do side by side comparisons to yours, it is possible you have a bad copy.

I would approach this a bit differently. The 35 mm GM at least on a 24 mp body I have looks great.

ISO, Auto

Aperture F 4

Shutter fast as I can get it

Center Point focus - focus on head/shoulders. Face detect off cause this is profile and i dont want other faces in this scene locked on to so to say.

AF-S

Move as close as you can

Now if this was a spontaneous call it "street photography thing. I would never shoot wide open since there are unpredictable subject matter and movements. F 4 maybe 5.6 minimum to be sure.

If I did not care I was noticed I might have a flash with me.

I think this is a photographer technique issue not the lens. The camera and lens is only as talented and creative as the one wielding it.

I think some menu tweaks like I would not shoot and I pretty much never shoot electronic shutter is a one off, thing comes to mind

Looking at this exact image your subject is on the back end of dof. Parts of it are almost focused, parts - not. And the ground in front - obviously in focus. Check your focus.
