Here we go. The 90 is here!!!

I decided to start off with the infamous Madagascar Sunset Moth wing. This is a popular subject to photograph at 10x, 20x and 50x. I’ve done these wings before with my Olympus MC-20/kenko16mm/Olympus60mm/Raynox 505 setup at 9x and have gotten some spectacular results.

I set things up in my “light box” drawer, attached my Olympus EM1 Mark 2 to my computer 💻 and used Olympus Capture (now called OM Capture) to move my focus manually with the MC-20/90mm macro setup at 4x magnification. Instead of using focus bracket mode, I manually moved the focus with the forward button on OM Capture. This allowed me to take 41 high resolution mode 50MP images to then stack in Helicon. I ended up with a 33mp file which of course won’t post in all its glory here - but I’ll post it regardless along with three crops showing the detail I was able to capture. The great thing is I also did a stacking just using focus bracket mode and got probably 99% the same result. It rarely helps to do high rez stacks…just so you know. But I did it anyway just to see how much it would help.

Image 1 is the 50MP high rez stack
Image 2 is a crop of that 50MP stack
Image 3 is a further crop
Image 4 is a further crop
Image 5 is a stack of 156 focus bracketed shots
Image 6 is a crop of the regular stack
Image 7 is a further crop of the regular stack

I will be using this thread to showcase what this lens is capable of to the best of my ability. Any questions are welcome!

In all honesty, I’m seeing results of detail that’s similar to what I’ve done with and what I’ve seen done with the Mitutoyo 10x!!

Perhaps I should give up the a65 with the 100/2.8 macro and get the 90 for the OM-1 I just received yesterday?

Here we go. The 90 is here!!!
There are no words in English, Elvish or Sanskrit that can adequately describe such splendor!

Please do not post results from extension tube + MC-20 + 90mm + Raynox 505. My heart will explode.

Suffice to say that I have been looking forward to this post (and thread) ever since the 90mm was first announced. :-)

Thank you and congratulations!

Fantastic!!! And, congrats on the new lens.

It's funny how much I enjoy seeing your photographs, just like those of several very skilled and dedicated photographers who post here. It's today's version of waiting for a nature magazine to arrive each month, I guess. Anyway, thanks again for sharing once more; I have not yet tried macro photography, but your photos and descriptions have expanded my awareness of what is possible, in a theoretically achievable way.

I'm looking forward for your photographs with this lens. I am more sure than before that It Is quite a lot, given your first effort, unlike what is being said here and elsewhere

Fabulous! This now means the 'm' in m43 has a dual meaning; micro & macro.

Looking forward with anticipation to further postings.

Technically, my first shot with the new lens. Sharp as a tack. The spider sadly wasn’t alive - it was a pet for 6 months and died 5 days ago. But I kept it as I was planning to put it in resin to preserve it.

so how does it compare to my other setup you’re probably wondering? I can get 3.8x magnification with my MC-20/Kenko16mm/Olympus60/Raynox250 combination. I have to back the 60 lens off to about 0.75 in order to be at around 3.8x magnification as the setup gets me up to about 5.5x.

I did pretty much the same shot with that setup as well. No sharpening done at all with either shot.

So many will wonder, why get the 90mm if I can do the prettt much the same with 1of1images’ 60mm modification?

Well, two reasons to start that are evident here. One, the shots with my modified setup and 60 was at 1/2 second exposures with my lighting. So that took a good 80 seconds to get the 160+ images needed for the stack I did.

The 90mm setup with the teleconverter was at 1/5 second exposures. Now, why did it take 351 shots to do the same stack?? The step size was 1/10 for both images - but with the 90 I’m thinking that the step size is half what the 60 is capable of maybe ?? So if I had changed it to 2/10 for the 90’s shots, I could have done this in 175 shots at 1/5 second which would have meant 35 seconds to get my needed shots - or half what the 60 setup took me.

With a dead bug it doesn’t matter as much, but out in the field , taking a pic of a spider in a dew filled web at 3x like I did last year took a good 60 seconds- and halving that would be wonderful!

Also, the working distance with this setup was more than double with the 90. The Kenko really reduces your working distance, but to be able to get 4x magnification without the Kenko means you can maintain the working distance between you and your subject.

Great images Ethan, if you were to show these images to someone with no knowledge of your work, they wouldnt guess what these subject matter are of.

They look like Rattan Furniture light up with coloured lights.

Well done and keep them coming.

How do you judge sharpness between the Teo macros?

You have to be happy with the 90 , the image is slightly crisper and more working distance. win win.

I always look forward to your posts in anticipation of the wonderful images you create.

When the 90 was announced I did wonder how it would compare with your 60 setup.

Thank you for answering my unasked question.

Dicky.

i will be waiting for an image of a live mosquito before i make judgement. i chose this shot because everyone has mosquitos and it will be a fair comparison.

Yes always live. That's the challenge for sure.

Very much like a Charles Kreb shot that one.

Danny.

Looking good and thanks for posting. :)

But what I don't understand is how you managed to get yours so soon, when all indications here in the UK are that it will not be available until early March. Anyway - well done.

Mike

Great info and great examples. Thanks for sharing!

I of course wonder how the 90mm performs combined not only with TC, but also with the Raynox lenses - from 150 up to 505. I hope to get my copy of the 90mm beginning next week and then hopefully will find the time to try those combos out.

It doesn’t work. Don’t even try it. For some reason it creates blurry images with the raynox filters. I tried all three.
Good to know. Thanks for trying!
