But in an oddly coincidental move, the major suppliers now have the Fujifilm 56mm f/1.2 on discount putting it at 699USD. So now, is the bargain still a bargain?

Given no budget restriction, which of these two (and these two only for you rules breakers) would you get, and why?

The 56 in question is the mark 1 version so even at 699 it’s still pretty steep.

I’ve not had the pleasure of using either but I would imagine the Viltrox is considerably better than the OG 56mm. Happy to be told otherwise of course.

I just got the Viltrox 75, so haven't put it to good use yet. I used to own the 56 mark 1.

So far, I like the Viltrox much better. It has a dreamy look that is hard to explain and seems sharper to me.

Of course, the eye AF on my latest camera (XH2S) probably helps quite a bit vs when I used an XT2 with the 56.

Yes it has great reviews but the old 56 which i own is still excellent. I am not keen about the size/weight of the Viltrox. Also, the 56mm focal length is more useful to me. Between these two, I'd stick with the Fuji...you should be able to pick up a used one much cheaper.

BTW, a better comparison would be the Viltrox vs the upcoming Samyang 75mm f1.8...smaller, lighter & cheaper.

I would get the one that corresponds to the focal length I need.

from the YouTube review I've seen by paltech, its a great lens with dreamy bokeh but it's AF performance for shooting videos is horrible with a lot of delay, breathing, hunting. That's a show stopper for me.

The Samyang is a full stop darker, so I can understand why it's lighter and cheaper. I like the old 56 f1.2 but I can see a number of the use cases where I will prefer a 75mm, The Viltrox's very large aperture is a big plus point, IMO.
