In this thread we will look at the dismantling of a first crane with the help of a second one. Let us introduce these two cranes that will have to coordinate their actions.

First, here is the tower crane to be dismantled.

I thought it was huge, but one of its dismantlers told me it was just average. Still, it is big enough to be difficult to photograph in a urban environment.

Next is the mobile crane used for the dismantling. It is a 120 ton crane. We see it here lowering two counterweight elements.

This is also a medium-sized crane, and there are models weighting 500 tons. Nevertheless, it is also difficult to photograph it in its entirety. Here are some other pieces of it.

The last of these pictures shows us a detail of the telescopic mast. Taken during the action, it reveals that this mobile crane could go much higher, since there are still two elements that it has not deployed.

More pictures to come in the following days. Stay tuned ;)

Thanks L, but hold your enthusiasm in check, as I have stayed at ground level ;)

The first step is to remove the hook and the cables that go with it.

The second step is to remove part of the counterweights.

We can only continue when we have removed part of the boom because we must not unbalance the mast too much.

The part of the boom to be removed is first attached to the mobile crane. In the photo below, you can see that the dismantler is attached to his lifeline.

The part to be removed is then separated from the rest of the boom.

Next, the mobile crane places it in the street, waiting for a truck to come and remove it.

The counterweight removal can now be resumed, and so on. At each step, the operator of the crane to be removed rotates it a half turn to present its appropriate part to the dismantling crane.

Very interesting series, a question- who unbolts all the sections before the are disassembled and lowered to the ground? Regards. L

thanks. Very interesting. Must be a well practiced routine, since the erection was probably done by same crew in reverse. Reminds me of an old toy "Erector Sets" where the parts are all made to fit together.

As for the photos and style, I can't think of any way to improve as long as you are wisely on the ground. Not a subject that needs any "artistic effects". I think the real story is the men climbing on the rig to connect and disconnect the pieces.

Thank you L. for this question. The sections are connected by pins, which are removed with a hammer by the people you have already seen, as follows:

Thank you KCK14. Indeed I had no wish to get closer to the action, and they would not have allowed me to do so anyway. The crane pilots are also a very important part of the story.

The trucks remove the dismantled elements and may bring empty trailers.

402c1af4582f4302a3670240eeddaa45.jpg

These trailers are unloaded by the mobile crane.

1a4efe18baa141f3a6525e49b11d3a1d.jpg

The loading of the trailers is delicate, because it is necessary to place heavy parts with precision. The next photo shows a trailer loaded with base weights (those that prevent the crane from tipping over in the wind). These triangular weights have been placed in a staggered pattern. The mobile crane places a mast element on top.

0980dfe7e1c94034884e5c78d28b1bf1.jpg

The crane operator receives movement instructions by gestures because the actors are in visual contact.

The role of the crane operator of the crane to be dismantled is modest since he only has to rotate it from time to time by 180°. Moreover, he can hardly be seen from the ground.

The role of the crane operator of the dismantling crane is on the other hand crucial, and his concentration is palpable.
