Costco is transferring their online photo presence over to Shutterfly by end of month.

Don't know if this will be a good thing for me or others. Need to look closer

My go to is Bay Photo so it will not impact me.

I've used Costco exclusively for the past 10 years even after they ended their in store service. . Quality results and good value.

Guess I'll look for another.

Ah sorry to hear that.

There was discussion about this on slickdeals, its a bad thing for sure.

Price per product is way higher on shutterfly, even after the "51% costco member discount" they are offering (which is available anywhere, its not special for costco members) plus no free shipping below $49 dollars.

Its unfortunate, there is not a single upside to this.

Ever since Costco stopped in store services I've only used the online printing couple times. I missed the immediacy of the in store experience. It may be part of Costcos online sales of anything being poor compared to other retailers. And now onto membership cost increase.

Oh well.

In that case would it not be easier to use Shutterfly directly?

Shutterfly in any form is much more expensive than the Costco online option.

So, for now, I'll just download my Costco photos to my computer and see what other options exist in the future.

Not sure about direct comparisons as we typically use Shutterfly for special projects. Their pricing, however, is usually promotional and they email really great coupons all the time. We’ve come to pretty much ignore what their website says on pricing.

Reminds me of the Kohl’s marketing where they always leave you feeling like you got a great deal because they jack up their “list” prices and send out coupon codes for x # of free prints and free shipping or 50 free pages in a photo book or whatever.

It appears Sam's Club is still doing online photo service.

I am very upset with Costco. First they close the in store labs

which was a great convenience and now the Costco online is essentially going away.

I have been using them for 14 years and spend over $2,000 a year on prints.

i am going to try Sam's Club and see how that works out.

Also will look at Millers and Richmond.

Oh well.

Not happy with this. Shutterfly has experienced notable data breaches over the past few years (and likely additional unreported breaches). Not the biggest fan of their privacy policy either.

Score another one for Murphy's Law. Oh well.

Last March, wired.com published an article that could be of help to those wondering what to do next, now that Costco has pulled the rug out from under:

The 6 Best Photo Printing Services

It names Mpix as best for most people; Printique "best for photo nerds." (Disclaimer: nerds is the articlce writer's term, not mine.) Shutterfly is deemed best for creating photo books.

The article also lists some to steer clear of, starting with Amazon.

While I haven't been a regular at having prints made in recent years, I considered Costco my go-to place when I did want prints. Back in the day, Eastman Kodak's processing and printing were excellent. More recently, I found Costco to be consistently better than some others I tried, including Shutterfly. Not that Shutterfly was terrible. I just thought Costco produced consistently better print quality, both when it was in-store and later, online. Maybe (he wrote, hopefully) Shutterfly has upped its game since.

I don't have a Costco anywhere near me, so never had an opportunity to use them. As far as I know, Wal-Mart still offers on-site printing. I haven't used it in several years though. I do like Mpix, but of course there is shipping cost involved so not a good option for small quantities.

Sorry folks, but it's not about your photography, it's about money.

I've used Shutterfly for convenience. It's like the Walmart or 7-11.

I use a local lab for paid work where the quality needs to be top notch.
I don't agree with your anti-capitalistic proselytizing and I doubt many others do either.

You apparently missed the OP's comments that he is not looking for a top notch printer for paid work. He used Costco for 10 years, liked the convenience and is looking for something comparable.

Cheers,
Doug

Shutterfly really that bad ? I never had issues with them, but interesting to read other’s experience are not very good.

Pricing - I never pay full price on anything. Shutterfly’s discounts are very good to me.

I have used Walmart for standard printing in the last years. Largely to do with the fact I can almost see the store from where I live and it's never so busy that I don't get my prints in 10 minutes. I have found the quality to be very good as well.
