Trying some new lighting in the studio. I don't often use a side light technique for my normal portrait work, but I plan on doing more of it. Feedback is definitely appreciated.

For this shot I used an AD600Pro with a double diffused 60" Octobox positioned to the side for the key light, with the mid point slightly elevated above my eyes. It was set @ 1/8, an AD200Pro for a rim light on my left side and a V-flat on my left to fill in shadows a little. Canon R5, with the RF85mm f1.2 set at f6.3, shutter speed of 1/250 and ISO 100.

Hi Jake,

i like the light distribution and the face is lit spot on for my taste.

i like to point 2 things out what i think could need further fine tuning.

first, there is a bright spot on your hand, what catches the light and distracts the view away from the eyes. maybe feather the key light bit more towards camera, or burn off some or the bright areas in pp.

second, your black sweater and the background have no separation and appear as one dark area. i d like to see some rim light to create some separation between sweater and background. feathering the one rim towards the background and flag it so that it dont hit the background could help, but i guess there would be the need for a second rim from the other side. other option could be to allow some light on the background to create a separation.

all the best, merry Christmas to you, Marc

I think it's back-focused. The small hairs on the earlobe are tack sharp, eyebrows not so much.

Otherwise I would echo a-marc's feedback, particularly on the finger. Having said that, on my monitor there is a difference between the sweater and the background, it's just very subtle.

A hair light feathered a bit off off the hair would be another way to get an edge on the shoulders, if that's what you want. Or a bit more fill.

Thanks for the feedback, Marc! I appreciate it. I'll work on some of the recommendations 👍. I hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thanks for the feedback! Focus was a little tricky when I took this shot. I was connected via the app and tapping the screen to get the camera focused on me. I'll have to look closer at the picture. I appreciate the feedback!
