Do you attach your lens caps to your lenses?

Howdy,

Wasn't sure where to post this so hopefully it fits here. I'm just wondering if anyone attaches your lens caps to your camera or to your lens via any sort of strap, or if you just keep them in your pocket.

I end up misplacing/losing lens caps a lot so I thought attaching them to the lens somehow might help.

I've tried some things similar to this: https://smile.amazon.com/Altura-Photo-Premium-MagicFiber-Cleaning/dp/B0058I7CVE

But after a while, the sticky tape gives out on the lens cap, or the elastic loses it's oomph and slides off the lens.

Just wondering what anyone else does.

Thanks!

Pocket. I've thought of using string attachments, but sometimes I leave the cap off for a while when actively shooting and wouldn't want the cap dangling there.

Most times I shoot I have some level of clothing on where I can put the cap in a pocket. Otherwise I set the cap somewhere in view so I don't lose it.

No , No leashes of any type. I don't usually put them in my pocket unless I start out with a cap and then take it off to shoot.

Usually the caps are on the lenses while in my backpack and when I remove a lens to attach it to the camera the cap comes off and stays in the pack until the camera goes back in. I don't take the cap of and put it back on then take it back off and then back on again etc. I also don't use filters for protection, so only the caps!

I think the lens cap was attached to a string on my first (compact) digital camera but not after that. I also tried the kind of cap that sits permanently on the lens and opens when you extend it. Only for collapsible lenses I guess. Didn't like it. Surprisingly I have managed to lose less than one cap a year just stowing them in a pocket. They are mostly expendable and cheap and I have some spares. I think there are caps with lugs so you can tie them to the strap lug on the camera with a piece of thin string if you prefer that.

Pocket. Tried the elastic thing and the lens cap just seems to get in the way (I'm shooting primarily manual-focus film cameras so need to spin things on the barrel).

I find myself losing things too if I don't have a designated location for them. So I have learned to have either specific or generic locations for thing I might have to put down. For lens caps, that specific location is my left shirt pocket, and in those cases where I don't have a shirt pocket, it goes in the left pants pocket. I tend not to take photos without wearing pants, so that covers just about all cases.

I use a small pouch which is always inside my camera bag.

I am usually shooting with 2 cameras and 5 lenses. Before starting of a shooting session I would uncap all of my lenses in advance for faster lens swapping. Therefore, I have to deal with 3 back caps and 5 front caps. A small pouch could keep them nicely.

At the end of the session, I shall cap all of the lenses.

Never lose one so far :-) .

Like apparently a lot of people I just use my pockets. Besides occasionally first looking for it in the wrong pocket it works well for me.

I have got into the routine of always putting the lens cap into a particular pocket, preferable one with a zip or similar fastening.

I guess that I lose about one lens cap every 5-10 years. An old sock is a good emergency lens cap on trips. :-D

Those ‘strings’ are a curse, they catch on something or twist around the focusing or zoom ring. And a dangling lens cap is a nuisance. When they come attached to a third party lens hood I throw them away.

I found last year what I think is a far better solution, a clip which fits onto a wide camera strap:

(Retailer chosen at random btw; didn’t want to advertise any Fleabay sellers.)

And there’s Kood’s ‘press in’ versions: https://www.koodinternational.com/camera-lens-cap-holder-buckle-for-72mm-77mm-82mm-caps-445-p.aspo The problem with those however, is you may need more than one attached to the strap depending on the filter size of lenses you regularly carry.

With me pants-off photography occurs in the home studio and on hot summer days :-) but then the search area is limited. Sometimes they stay 'lost' in the 'wrong' pocket for some time, maximum until laundry day.

Pocket. I tried a lens cap leash, it fell off.

in my pocket pocket mostly; simple elegant solution with no bobbing strings attached to the cap.

but when it comes to leashes i like a wrist leash for my cameras. very cheap to buy and dropping a camera becomes a worry of the past.

let go of a camera and it just bobs around.

read the forums, ...how many talk about dropping their expensive cameras and crying. an inexpensive leash on the camera could have made that a non event.

i don't care for neck straps, very clunky and inconvenient.

As soon as I lose one I buy two replacements so that I won't be without one if I lose another. Of course, once I've done that I don't lose any more.

I am now considering buying one replacement with the lens with the belief that I won't lose any more.

I usually just drop them in a pocket, but sometimes in my camera bag. On occasion I've failed to put them back on when switching lenses, so have been known to find a cap in my pocket weeks later & had to try & work out which camera bag the lens is in.

I shoot multiple systems each with multiple lenses so a generic cap can be a pain to identify.

No straps for me. But I buy cheap caps from China for a couple of bucks. I have lots of spares.

I have learned that I have great skill at losing lens caps.

So I tether mine. Since all the commercial tethers I have encountered are less robust than I want, I make my own. These never fail, and I never lose caps.

I hardly ever use lens caps at all anymore. My lenses have hoods to protect them and have never been cleaner since I stopped putting caps with pocket fuzz on them. They sit happily in my bag facing down with just rear caps when I’m not using them.
