greetings all- I joined the forum hoping for some input on zoom lens.

I have an Olympus PEN E-P7 camera with just base Olympus 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ ED M.Zuiko lens.

I’d like to add a little more zoom capability and am wondering if it would make sense to go with a 1.4 lens extender on this lens? I don’t have ton of familiarity with these Olympus cameras but am assuming that would be a possibility? Or would it make more sense to just go with a different zoom lens? I don’t need super zoom capability but would like to extend my range a bit.

I just didn’t know what focal length others have had best luck with on these cameras and what would make most sense. I don’t have any particular subject matter or photo needs as it’s more of an all around camera for me.

Thanks in advance!

I've been very pleased by the results I'vehad from the simpler of the two Panasonic 12-60 zooms... the f 3.5 to 5.6 version... when using that with the EP7 and also with its slightly larger sibling, the E-M10 IV.

Most usefully, there's a gain at both ends of the zoom range over the EZ lens!

Extender makes sense for lenses like 40-150/2.8 or 300/4, not for kit lens.

For start get the cheap but quite good Olympus 40-150/4-5.6. That lens is cheap (2nd hand about $80-120), small, light but very capable. I've added also lens hood for it from aliexpress ($5?), which helps significantly when shooting towards sun and having telephoto without hood is strange.

Pentax K20D + Sigma 50-200/4-5.6

Olympus EPL-6 + Olympus 40-150/4-5.6

(Sort of equivallency)

I have the Pana 12-60 on my GX80 and intend keeping it if I decide to get the E-P7 to replace the GX80 as it’s a fantastic lens which I use all the time. Get one, you won’t be disappointed.

Smallish ones. 40=150R, P45-150, 45-175, etc.

Peace.

If you want all in one, don't get the Panasonic 12-60, you're wasting your money. Buy a used 14-150, but beware it is going to be quite a bit bigger.

The best option for small size and small price is to get the 40-150 and carry two lenses.

Another idea: Just add the Panasonic 35-100 f/4.0-5.6 to your kit. It is a super small lens (collapsed it is just as long as your 14-42 fully extended, and just 44 grams heavier). Fits easily in your pocket. And great image quality.

E-P7 owner here. I use the Panasonic 14-42 G Vario II. If you willing to futz with an extender I assume you won’t mind changing lenses on occasion. I’d keep it small and add the Panasonic 45-150. It takes off from where you currently end, inexpensive, fits the size of the camera.

Comment on the P12-60. I had one. If you’re willing to mount it on an E-P7 I’d suggest you take a look at the P 14-140. It's near the same size and weight, the CG is close to the body and it’s a substantially nicer lens. Mine vs my 12-60 is better contrast, sharper, and substantially better build quality. Frankly, they both accomplish what you’re looking for at the cost of ruining the E-P7's size/weight profile. I have the P12-35 and the P14-140. Neither has ever been mounted on my E-P7, nor do I expect they ever will be.
