My current gear is as follows:

Canon R5

RF 15-35 F2.8

RF 24-70 F2.8

RF 70-200 F2.8

RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1

I have been contemplating selling my RF 15-35 as i dont use it very often. I was thinking of picking up the 16mm f2.8 in case i do want those wider than normal shots. I am also thinking that if i do sell my 15-35 I may have enough to finally get a drone that could round out my gear some. Knowing I am going to costa rica at the end of next month, is this a potentially good move?

Suggest yes.

Also suggest a 100mm macro lens?

Steamy in costa rica - so maybe add a 2nd body - R7?

Im living in Costa Rica these days. Was visiting for many years before. I completely enjoyed my ef 16-35 f4…..got lots of use: the wide vistas, and easy to zoom in to 24/35 etc. So I would be jealous of your 15-35! I also appreciated having 1.4 x on my 100-400…….so, I’d possibly suggest extender for your 100-500. And yes it is very humid. I’ve not had a body die here yet…..but a spare is always good.

From my personal experience, drone photography is a very own field (let alone filming..).

Depending on how much of a "once in a lifetime" this trip is for, I'd suggest not to dive into this field basically mid-vacation.

For me, not having understood or mastered something causes stress in the field and might dim the experience you'd otherwise have.

Just my 2 cents, and definitely something very individual..

I agree 100%, I had a drone and it was a distraction from my photography. You get really good shots with a drone but whilst your using it you will be missing opportunities for photographs.

As others have said decide on what photographs you want to take and concentrate on these areas.

As above. Without describing what you mainly shoot your question is of this nature:

I am going to do the trip by a car. What car would you suggest? I am also thinking about buying a trailer to that car. Is it a good idea?

I was there last summer. I definitely recommend adding a 1.4tc to the 100-500mm if you plan on photographing birds, sloths and other animals. I believe these were both 700mm with the 100-500mm and TC, second heavily cropped.

There are deals to be had on the DJI Mini 2 now that the 3 is out.

It packs light!

It's been a few years since my visit to CR. My recommendations include a large plastic bag and handful of silica gel packets. Store camera and lens in bag with packets and leave bag sealed when you go out until camera reaches ambient. Also found a flash extender, I think it was called "Better Beamer" if you're shooting wildlife under thick canopy it really helps.

good tips

I remembered when an extendable zoom all misted up inside.... weather sealing wont help if hot humid air pulled into cold glass and condenses...

If your accommodation has A/C, don’t keep your camera and lenses in your room - find a secure place to keep them in the ambient temperature and humidity. A cool camera/lens will fog up the instant you go outside, and may then be unusable for an hour or more. I know this may not be easy to find, but I have experience from Vietnam, Pacific islands etc of exactly this problem!

thank you all for the recommendations. Being that its my first time there im not sure what i will gravitate to photograph. I am thinking the ocean and sunsets for sure but definitely seaking some wildlife. I also saw that the RF100 macro is on sale for 1k so i might just get that. I used to have a drone but had two problems with it that i think the mini pro 3 will solve. Its smaller and i can get the one with the RC screen remote which using my iphone was another big annoyance.

Take your 100-500. Glad I took my 100-400 II when I went. There was no R or RF gear back then. Without that lens I would never been able to take this selfie :-D You want reach.

I nicknamed this critter Einstein.

Don't Look Up

No doubt you’ll find unlimited opportunities in CR, it really is a fantastic place and from checking out your Flickr page I think you’ll bring back lots of great photos. I mainly look for birds there and mainly stick with a 500mm f/4. A few of my photos from there can be seen here
