Hi, I'm starting to wonder if Canon get their hot shoe covers from the same place that make eyecups for Nikon, as my hot shoe cover has gone AWOL three times. When I first got the R3 I thought the cover was on pretty tight, few weeks later it came off, I retraced my steps and found it, got home and secured it with insulating tape, that'll do it thought I. Nope it didn't, but I did find find the cover again and applied more tape, a few days later I saw a naked hot shoe, luckily the the cover was in my bag.

My problems may be caused when I taking my R3 in and out of my bag, but I'd thought it worth a mention to alert other R3 owners, as new ones cost $15.

I metioned Nikon eyecups because I used to use Nikon, and lost four of them, which I never found and had to buy replacements, however when I got a D500, which doesn't have a removable eyecup, I found five on my travels, and found another one when I was looking the my hot shoe cover, lol.

I've tried several third party hotshoe covers on my R5 & R6. Every one has disappeared after a day or two. Now, I've given up and leave the hotshoe alone... but I have heard that the cover is necessary on other R-series models. I wonder if just putting a piece of gaffers tape over the hotshoe might work just as well.....

I've given up trying to keep the hot shoe cover on my R3, its bad design on Canons behalf IMHO. I also found that 3rd party covers don't fit without a bit of jiggery-pokery which isn't ideal.

From what I understand the only purpose of the cover is to stop dust and water making its way into the body ? If so then surely insulation tape would work as a fix ?

The problem is that the latest models - R3, R7 and R10 - have the new shoe which can communicate with the new accessories such as the tiny ST-E10 Speedlite transmitter. There is a 21-pin connector at the front of the hot shoe which must be hugely more vulnerable to moisture, contamination and physical damage than any regular hot shoe. Canon's solution, instead of designing the damn' thing properly in the first place, is to supply a cover which is a nightmare to avoid losing. I do still have mine but it's only a matter of time...

Cover seems tight, but it still loosens inadvertently, like on strap, traveling in car, sitting normally. I drop it like 5-6 times, 2 times found and pick up by co-worker, some by me (I am feeling very lucky not lost it). Today the cover lossen again when I am sitting at Event-Hall with Camera on strap, I found it next with my shoes. OK, I Decided to only use the origional when shooting outdoors on rainy days, and got the JJC ER-SC2 for R6II/R8 for normal protection.

Sorry guys but IMNSHO life is too short to worry about a hot shoe cover :-)

OMG mine keeps disappearing too into the never never! Hopefully canon will fix that issue, and the badly fitting lens caps and camera front cap! Why did they change things that work????

Build your own. Also you can adjust how tight they sit. Its not an R3 but ...

This is what I've been using on both of my R3 and R5, the covers are made of rubber material and stay on quite well.
+1

For the camera bodies that have the front "Accessory Contacts" I like using a similar model, except this rubber cover overhangs the critical contact area to seal it better...

Been using these for years (previously only found them on eBay). They work great!
