I just wanted to put his up. Some people have asked about noise, clarity, etc.

Not tack sharp but pretty good for the situation. It was early morning overcast light and hand-held at 1/640. Shot in EFS 30 fps in a short burst. Most of the images in the sequence were 'keepers'. This image was in the middle of the series. IBIS and lens stabilization work well together. Again, not a perfect image but decent under the grey conditions. The image is also uncropped shot in CRAW.

Processed for color/lighting in Lightroom. No noise reduction.

This is the same color and lighting but run through Topaz Photo AI. Denoise only with no sharpening applied.

Same Lightroom processing plus Topaz Photo AI (denoise only)

Very nice! Sharpness is pretty much ok for the conditions. The combo did a very nice job. Only a bit underexposed to my taste but that is very easily fixable.

Unless you do really large prints (e.g. 2x1.5 meters) there is no relevant reason for denoising of such an image.

great capture

Thank you for the input. I denoised it since I have a rotating set of images as background screens for my 32 inch monitor. I do see the noise in images on those I do not 'clean up'. In general, however, you are correct that the denoise isn't required.

I wanted to post a sample since there have been many questions out there. I also wanted to show what you can do with a camera body and lens that together cost less than the price of the RF 100-500. That is an excellent lens but that isn't an option for all people. I use my adapted EF 100-400 II so I haven't picked up the RF 100-400 though I have seen good images from it.

Hi

Great to see also the de-noised sample - and what the products quickly can do ;-)

It's just to me part of development, just like we did with our film images in the chemical dark room - turning a Raw file into an image.

Love the shot. I'm not sure if it's my browser or my machine, but if I flip back and forth between the two images, I see zero changes. I don't think it's possible for the noise reduction to be so subtle that I can't see the difference on a 4k monitor when flipping back and forth. Are you sure you didn't accidentally upload the same file twice?

Clearly different to me? With pixel peeping ;-)

Like the pixel peeping, you can also easily see the differences if you use the Loupe option when viewing the images. It is a subtle noise at 1600 which was also the point I was trying to make. Folks have complained about the crop sensors in general being noisier and they are. The actual noise, however, is not that extreme and images are usable for the most part.

Really, the most difficult aspect of low light and the RF 800 is focus lock-on. It struggles in lower light situations. In this particular case, the AF worked pretty well since the bird filled most of the frame. If the green heron was across the pond, AF would have struggled more due to the low light and the actual eye size in the sensor from that distance.

Yeah. That's clearly different. Not sure what was wrong with my situation. I'm not in front of my computer right now but will check it again later. Even at 100% I was not seeing that difference before. Weird.
