IF Ricoh/Pentax ... produced a:

D FA* 60-300mm F/4 - 5.6 ED PLM AW (with inbuilt swith activated D FA HD 1.4 TC <giving 84-420mm F/5.6-8>),

that weighed +/- 1,100g, was +/- 85mm diameter and +/- 175mm long,

and has nternal focus / rotary extending zoom ...

Would YOU buy it?

Sorry but no :-D

For my own use, it wouldn't bring enough advantages compared to the D FA 150-450 F/4.5-5.6 and the DA 55-300 PLM, to justify the (probably high) price of this D FA*.

Also I'm not sure the TC is that useful in this case. When switching it on, you would loose the 60-84mm range: is it a real issue ? If I had such lens, the TC would be ON all the time - so, I'd prefer not to be forced to buy the inbuilt TC along with the lens and use the one TC I already have.

That's just me though and I suppose you're not surprised :-D If I didn't already own the other lenses, I might find this interesting.

... Something else: 300 F/5.6 is a bit small aperture for a star lens

What if it was a:

D FA 60-300mm F/4 ED PLM AW (with inbuilt switch activated D FA HD 2x TC <giving 120-600mm F/8>),

that weighed +/- 1,100g, was +/- 85mm diameter and +/- 175mm long,

and has internal focus / rotary extending zoom ...

Just get this and be happy..

Sigma 100-300/4 EX DG (add 1.4x/1.5x/1.7x/2x TC if needed)

A lens that starts at 100mm at the widest end is of practically no use to me, especially if you add a TC and have 140mm at the wide end... or worse, 200mmm at the wide end.

What I want (so that I can pay money to Pentax) is a Pentax 50-500, or 45-450, or (Best): DA 55-550... but if that doesn't happen I will guard my Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM like my family... it is my family... I hope it never leaves me... I will always be faithful to my Sigma...

Wait! ... is that a Pentax 55-550 I see walking into the room? ... hubba hubba ;)

The main reasons I bought into Pentax were (are) its high quality, great value, and compact DSLR system. I don't want anything for my KP that is bigger than the superb 55-300 PLM zoom, so I'm not interested in the recent trend for expensive, heavy, monster lenses. (I would snap up a DA 28mm Limited!)

ok…? But that seems pretty specific (28mm). In what way are Pentaxians not already served by the DA 21mm limited, the DA 35mm limited, the DA 20-40mm limited… or the FA 31mm limited?

There's quite a big gap in angle of view between the 21 Ltd and the 35 Ltd, and I like the 28 mm focal length. For me a 28 Ltd would complete the set of DA pancake primes for the KP - 21, 28, 40 and 70. Everyone will have their own personal preferences and that happens to be mine! ;-) :-)

Cheers.

Philip

(P.S. If it had an optical viewfinder, I would probably get the Ricoh GR IIIx.)

Yeah, I know what you mean. Everyone has their personal favourite focal lengths and that’s all good 😊

My favourites focal ranges are:

50mm

58mm

65mm

75mm

113mm

170mm

200mm

240mm

290mm

330mm

370mm

410mm

450mm

500mm

If only there was a lens that could do all that… No, wait… There is!! … but it’s not a Pentax. ;) :) :D

With the excellent quality of the 55-300 PLM, I don't see the need for such dimensions/weight. I would go for it if it would be compact. If not, my 60-250 will do all I need it to...

So you want Sigma 50-500/4-6.3 EX DG..

And yes I'd love to have option to buy Sigma 60-600 Sport with K mount.. but that won't happen.

But that 100-300/4 pairs nicely with 18-135WR :)

Not really… I have a Sigma 50-500mm F4.5-6.3 DG OS HSM (in K mount)

I know that Sigma won’t do that… that’s why I want Pentax to do something similar :j

im sure it’s a nice combo, but I want something like my Sigma 50-500 from Pentax… in case my 50-500 buys the farm… :)

Wow. You guys argue, I mean discuss focal lengths and zoom ratios and DAs with or without stars -- I'm going to scroll thru the pictures a few more times.

Great images PentUp !!

There's quite a big gap in angle of view between the 21 Ltd and the 35 Ltd, and I like the 28 mm focal length. For me a 28 Ltd would complete the set of DA pancake primes for the KP - 21, 28, 40 and 70. Everyone will have their own personal preferences and that happens to be mine! ;-) :-)

(P.S. If it had an optical viewfinder, I would probably get the Ricoh GR IIIx.)
Agree with the body of your post and agree with the P.S. although I'd get the wide-angle version, not the x. That personal preference thing again. :-D

A lot of favourite focal lengths. ;-) And a wonderfull set of images, thank you. :-)

Cheers.

And where do you find one of those? I've seen lots of good things said about that lens in this forum so I've kept my eye out for it. Never seen one for sale.

Yup, +1 for the DA 28 Ltd. Don't forget the DA 40-80/f4 Ltd (or there abouts) to pair with the DA 20-40 Ltd. All for a compact KP kit(s).
Cheers.

Since there is no DA 28 Ltd I bought a GR IIIx :-) There is an optional coldshoe optical viewfinder... you loose the compact size though.

Doug

I already have two lens combos that meet this need.

I require a zoom that goes to 550 to 600

Sorry
