I don't know if you're seeing the same thing but his HHHR sample looks pretty terrible to me. At a quick glance it seems more detailed but if you actually look at it the extra detail is because there are jagged edge artifacts from the highres process everywhere.

HHRS is pretty good when movement is horizontal or vertical. The moon rotates slightly.

have you tried holding the camera in the line of the ecliptic. May work better? Though it may confuse the IS.

This is the only one (handheld high res) I have taken with the OM1. Not the typical late night shot, but one I took while photographing birds in the afternoon. (MC20+300mm f4)

This was taken in May 2020 during the first lockdown in the UK, when the atmosphere was less polluted and disturbed than usual. Not the OM-1 of course, but the E-M1X with 300mm F4 and MC20. Hand-Held High Resolution.

Actually I'm not sure the extra resolution helps as much as the multiple shots overcoming atmospheric disturbance. And not being a full moon provides side lighting which emphasised the craters.

Some editing to pull out as much detail as I could.

I have had similar results and posted a similarity question on the forum. What lens? I had issue with 100-400mm f5.0-6.3 IS.

I cant take high res shot from moon with 100-400mm zuiko, it always gives that red text error..

I get my best moon photos from single raws. I have tried high rez and stacking, and still the best is usually one (out of many) raw files.

I would suggest using a tripod and shooting hand held high res not tripod. This then uses the movement of the moon and I found it worked well.

This is with the 100-400 Olympus lens:

One should expect to take many attempts to get a good result out of this even with good technique due to atmospheric interference. This is essentially a form of "lucky imaging".

i think with anything delicate you should expect lots of attempts. This was shot on a cheap travel tripod triggered by my phone. It took 2 attempts. atmospheric distortion running the merge would basically ruin every shot. So par for the course. But it wasn’t that hard.

I get my best moon photos (if atmospheric conditions are good) by shooting raws with CAF and SH2 silent in short bursts. One of those electronic shutter multi shot modes that forces the camera to refocus with every shot.

You end up with a crap load of photos.

Then I run OM focus analyzer on them to sort out the sharpest images and group them.

Then inspect each. I usually end up with quite a few okay shot but only a few that will be superb.

I think the few superb ones just happen to be in in better focus and sync with less atmospheric distortion.

Then a lot of work on the best raw file.

are you triggering with the shutter, a remote or a timer? Also are they warm days or cool days?
