Hi there,

I have in mind to create a cityscape with a 400mm from a mountain next to the city. the goal here is to have a hi-definition panoramic view.

I was considering buying a dji ronin to automise the landscape because at 400mm there are gonna be a lot of pictures and I don't want to miss a frame in the middle of the panorama.

I know that the lens and camera will fit on the ronin but I don't know the limitation of the software if it can manage up to 400mm panning.

do you have any other suggestion or idea on another method to reach my goal of automising this process?

thank you guys

You are going to have to have some very, very, very clean and haze-free air to shoot through with that 400mm or all of those frames are going to be a worse result than just being closer and combining a lot less of them if you're going through this long telephoto process and tons of frames just for image quality.

If it is the only way to get the perspective or the framing you want that's is a different story, but doing it to make a huge pano with multiple rows and columns may work against itself due to the atmospheric conditions caused by the distance between you and the subject with such a long lens.

You're right there is gonna be some haze with such a long lens but I think there is still gonna be a very good result. I already did at 85 and the final result is really good.

the idea is to have a panorama from a view point 1000m higher.

thank you for taking time in reading and answering.

Do you plan on taking a multiple row pano or just a single horizontal or single row taken as a vertical to be made horizontal

if a single row, no special gear is needed, just make sure your tripod is perfectly level and you have plenty of overlap. Your ballhead may have markings on it, you can practice at home without being on location assuming you have some open space nearby ; take one photo for every mark on the ballhead as you pan and see how that works.

Done vertical panos at 400 mm that have come out well ; very sharp (i know I have at least 1 on my website) but the air conditions and wind can definitely be a factor out of your control

if you desire a multiple row pano for max resolution you may need extra gear.

It would be multiple vertical rows. When I did the same scene at 85mm it have been 3 rows of 6 pictures more or less so the amount of pictures to fill the same frame will be much more at 400mm.

I consider in getting a 3 axis head like the Benro GD3WH to move also vertically at the of a row to keep everything at the same level. it's a bit cumbersome with a ball head.

Curious what the intended end result is?

Now with improvements in software (for example Topaz Gigapixel AI) and higher resolution cameras I can print as large as possibly imaginable if I start with a clean single vertical row panarama. Can get close to 20K pixels out of camera (A7riv) once files are merged and Gigapixel can easily get it to 40K pixels with perfection.

That would get you a 3 meter / 12 foot wide print at 300 PPI ; and at that size the need for 300 PPI would be questionable.

Anyway, the above reasons mean I no longer even consider taking more than single row panos and think that is true for most where the multiple row pano is becoming a thing of the past.

The folks into Astro (subforum on this board) may be most up to date / knowledgeable as I can see a use case there for long lens multiple row panos as well as automation.

My goal is to have a file where I can zoom to see details of the city where I live just for the fun of being able to zoom in.

I already printed the panorama edition created with a 85mm lens and is already to big to print at 100%.

So I end up ordering the Benro Polaris yesterday to give it a try and see how it performs... I don't know if it is able to handle panoramas at 400mm but I'll test that.
