Hi

i have a Olympus 5 mk iii. I’m looking for a purse backpack that has separate (preferably side) camera storage. All the backpacks I seee look so big. Would prefer size of convertible purse/backpack. Want to hold camera 3 lenses, wallet drink tissue… water bottle holders on side big plus. Thanks

Both Oly and Panasonic have made smaller cameras. If you REALLY want a small camera buy a used Panasonic GM5.

Olympus digital PEN cameras are small, but not quite that small.

I use a Tenba BYOB 9 (this is an insert) and I put it into a casual looking 28L backpack. There is also a a 18L version of the backpack. On my pack I have a side access zipper, I use this to access the BYOB cube. I load the cube on its side and fold the lid open so that I can access my camera gear through the side zip. I will load my water bottle ont the other ide of the pack and then stuff a rain jacket and snacks into the pack to take up space.

Hope this helps.

I second the suggestion of using an insert to turn any similar-sized bag into a camera bag. That gives you a larger spectrum of bag styles and features from which to choose. Here in Japan, that is a whole category called “bag-in-bag” and I have bought some to customize bags and backpacks I have previously purchased. We also have a sub-brand of Hakuba here, which is called Chululu. That brand seems to be designed more like purses, but made out of neoprene and other camera bag materials. Maybe it is available where you are.

More recently, I have taken to just sewing simple modifications to my preferred everyday bag, which is a Chrome Industries cross-body sling. I am not suggesting that style bag for you, just that modifications can be pretty simple. I typically sew sheets of the loop part of hook-and-loop (Velcro) fasteners over the lining of the bag. Then I can use regular camera bag dividers in there. The end result is more customizable and lighter than using an insert.

One other brand to check out: Peak Design’s latest stuff includes some convertible-carry products.

I was looking for a compact messager-style bag. There were a couple I tried but returned. This one was very nice, but smaller than it looks.

This one was also nice but also a little small. So I returned it also.

This one I kept and really like.

I have a M-10 II, 12-45 F4, 40-150 F4, small flash, filters, batteries. Room for a couple small primes.

I have a backpack if I need something larger ...

And I found Mont Bell has (had?) a series of camera insert (padded cases having zip top) in L/M/S size for various combination. They are good to carry simple gears in any backpack.

Check out Jototes.com.

I don't know a lot about backpacks, but if I did I would want to know In what kinds of situations you plan to use it? Which 3 lenses? Price range?
