A7R IV at 230.000 shutter count, should I expect it to fail soon?

My a7 r IV is still going at 1 million 750,000 shutter count mech and 70,000 silent
Did I read that right, 1.750.000 shutter count? :-)
There were reports of a Canon 1D shooter getting well over 2 million shots on a single shutter rated at 300k. Sadly the replacement “only” lasted 800k :-(

The ratings on the shutter are “expected”, rather than absolute - there is no counter in the camera that locks it up when it hits the estimate.

I would not be surprised if they somewhat understate the shutter life estimate so more than half of the people exceed it.

Anyway, I would not worry too much about an A7RIV that has reached 230k - still plenty if life left in that shutter.

shooting in silent mode might be ok if your images are still, however if shooting anything with movement you risk distortion ruining your image due to rolling shutter effect.
I shoot sports - that's my job. Used electronic shutter on A9, A9-2, now on A1. My default shutter speed is 1/1000 sec. Never had a problem with the rolling shutter effect.

The electronic shutter does not increase the counter of the mechanical shutter as it is not being used.
The A7RlV does show significant rolling shutter distortion in silent shooting mode.
Pardon me, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought the A7R series are not for sports, as R means for Resolution. I thought the A7S series are for sports as in S for Speed or Sports photography.
You could shoot sports with a cell phone, according to the ads for the latest Google phone.

I have seen a guy shooting sports on a Fuji GFX. He seemed to do a lot of waiting for “the moment” :-)

Using an A7R series camera is not outside the realm of possibility. Sure, it’s slower, and tolling shutter on e-shutter can be an issue, but I’m sure there are plenty of good sports photos shot in one. The A9 and A1 make it a lot easier, but they aren’t obligatory.

In my experience you should be fine for a few more years.

Though I'd be looking into a used a9II or A1 if I were you. I found a decent deal on an A1 on ebay and switched from the a7rIV and haven't regretted it.

It kind of builds up as a motorsport photographer. I usually come home with 15.000 photos after each event.

I read Sony full frame cameras are tested at 500.000, but that's about 1-2 years away at this rate.
Is there a way to minimize the risk of failing?
Dang if those are shot with the normal compressed RAW filesize that typically seems to be about 67 Megabytes (took the value from my A7RV), then you have produced:
230 000 * 67 = 15 410 000 Megabytes = 15 048 Gigabytes = 14,7 Terabytes.

The a7R,S,a9 and a1 series have a shutter rated for half a million times, but often can go much longer than that.

Unlike the a7c/a7m series.

No. Shutter rating do not imply your shutter will burn on once you past the mark. I've exceeded the ratings by well over 2x and have yet to burn out a a7 series shutter. It's akin to an automobile engine with a 60,000 mile warranty. It doesn't imply you need to replace the engine at 60,001 miles - nor switch to coasting downhill in neutral after that mark.
