In the build-up to Fujifilm’s launches this week, we shot a series of samples with the 150-600mm F5.6-8. These were created using an X-T4 so that the X-H2S could be shot separately, allowing us to provide more samples and more information for our readers at launch.

It was only after publication we were told that the lens will not work to its full ability until firmware updates have been issued. Upon finding this out, we made the decision to take the gallery down.

We want everything we publish on DPReview.com to be valuable to our readers, which means ensuring it is both accurate and meaningful (in this case, by being representative of the lens). We apologize for falling short on this occasion.

Thank you for the post.

Any chance you could create a new gallery with the XF 150-600mm lens + X-H2S so that we can get a good idea of the lens' capability?

Thanks.

We're hoping to. We're just trying to work out whether to wait for a production X-H2S body, first.

Rather wait for a production copy of the XF 150-600mm and supported firmware on the other bodies. That will be more interesting imo :-)

Appreciated. Mistakes can be made and it is goodvthat you took appropriate action when guys found out.
I hope you can nail it this time and show the real deal.

Thanks Richard for explaining that this happened. I was finding a bit hard to believe the performance of this lens.

It would be great if this was posted front news and center until a new gallery shows up in the main news feed, as many checked the previous gallery and are still going to get the wrong impression about the performance of the lens.

Thanks again for all the hard work.

Many thanks for that, Richard. Really looking forward to the final gallery and review. This lens looks like a real winner.

It's the older cameras that needed the firmware to support the new lens.

Maybe some people would like to demand that all old products need to anticipate all future products but those people have clearly never developed a product.

Though I appreciate the apology here, it would be more effective if read in the same location as the original review, ie the main landing page.

Pretty severe and rooky mistake for a resource with such a large audience and vicarious influence. Especially in light of the importance of these combined products for Fuji.

Have to be honest, my expectation of veritable and unbiased content from DPR has sadly waned over the last couple years. When I saw the review gallery and compared to other reviewer Jpeg files, my initial thoughts were "DPR is purposefully marginalizing the quality of this lens for the Sony money-train"... sounds like that wasn't the case, but sad it was my first thought.

Looking forward to seeing DPR's updated gallery.

I appreciate your sincerity Richard. I do wonder why you have published anything as both camera and lens firmware are pre-release.

I think that is what a lot of people see when their favorite brand is "mistreated" instead of not first giving a bit of benefit of the doubt to an honest mistake.

The problem was with using a camera (the X-T4) that was not ready for the lens because it needs a firmware update to interact correctly with it. At this point, only the X-H2S can drive the lens correctly.

It may be more than just driving the lens yet is it truly correct in pre production firmware? It is rare to see them even go back and take another look at a camera after a major firmware update. For example, the X-T3 is totally different from when it was launched.

Frankly, if the Firmware is pre-production, then changes are coming and they could be important. I did not see the X-T4 samples, was anything wrong with them?

As an engineer, it is not ready till its ready and the quality assurance team state's it's ready.

This is a Fuji marketing game.

Good news papers make mistakes. However, when they do they print retractions for everyone to see. Making a mistake is not the issue. The real issue is not publicly admitting to the mistake and print a retraction.

It is interesting to potential buyers, even if not fully done. And while I would expect pre-release lenses to miss out on lens correction profiles—having it produce "broken" images is not something I would expect.

And does this mean that the lens will not work on older cameras? I think it would be interesting to hear more details about the Fujifilm design choices. I'm sure there are good reasons for doing it this way.
