Hi, does anyone have experience of the effectiveness of the hand held high res mode on Olympus omd em 1 iii or 1x ? Is it worth up grading from mark ii ? Thanks.

My initial testing of HHHR on my newly acquired shows excellent image quality, and am very happy with the results. Only you can determine if the upgrade makes sense for you. Personally, knowing what I know between the two, I would definitely upgrade! ;-)

Agree. As you have the mk2 you'll know the limitations of HR mode, handheld works perfect with those same limitations. I'm very happy with it.

Compared to tripod high res on EM1.2, the hand held (and tripod as well) high res on EM1X and later models shows less artifacts.
For me, high res on EM1.2 and earlier models is only good for scenes without any moving parts, due to the ugly hatching artifacts that show up otherweise.

I'll say it's good. Pana GH6 HHHR would probably be considered better, for the way it handles moving objects within the multiple HR shots.

MAJOR cost, size, and weight increase over the E-M1 MkIII, if the O.P. doesn't mind. Personally, I don't feel it's near worth it. ;-)

Having tried the tripod Hi Rez on other Olympus bodies, I’ve now settled on the Hand Held Hi Rez as my standard… E-M1 III , and now OM-1.

Some Examples.

HHHR 25mpx JPEG building is 1.9 miles distant.

Crop from above image

Street scene 25mpx JPEG 12-100

Normal 20mm shot , building in background is 900 yards distant.

Same building, same spot, 364mm PanLeica no crop 25 mpx JPEG (zoom to 100% for detail)

I have the EM1.3 and still haven't found a case where HHHR was critical for my shot and opened new creativity ways. It works but don't really know where to use! I am very curious to see photos where HHHR made them look better.

The high res mode was great for photographing a really old, poster sized document that some one wanted a duplicate of that could print full size with good detail. It worked perfectly. It was hard to tell the copy from the original.

The improvement is noticeable to me, especially for larger prints. Perhaps for web sharing or social media the differences are not worthwhile.

I have both the Mark 3 and the OM-1. Both do a great job with HHHR. The OM-1 is way faster at processing and is a beautiful camera all round.

The great thing with HHHR is that it really reduces noise with high iso images.

Obviously for larger prints.

Less obvious: as a means to reduce noise, and for astro photography (on a tripod).

One thing I have discovered is don't be afraid to wind up the output sharpening to max after resizing.

In fact I find it essential, I use Sharpen AI.

You will have less noise with HHHR. That is especially visible in higher ISOs (almost 3 stops difference at ISO 1600). Less noise also means better tonality.

I try to use HHHR when light is low and noise is high.

That is most certainly true for the HiRez raw files. For my use cases I most often choose the 25 mpx HHHR JPEGS over the Raws. Maybe not as suitable for huge blowups, but much less sharpening needed and I find the final results to compare favorably with the Raws.

A big +1 for Sharpen AI, and for DeNoise AI if needed.

A question for anyone using HHHR on the OM-1. When I did it it seems the only option is to get both a JPEG and a RAW or just JPEG. I don’t remember this being the case on the Mark3. I only want the RAW files but that doesn’t seem to be an option on the OM-1.

Carol,

It's the same way on the OM-1, E-M1X and MKIII. No ORF only. There is JPG only 25 and 50 but RAW comes with a JPG (and ORI).

Have both cameras, and I say yes, get one now. If you think you'll use the mode, absolutely get an X or III.
