Which has best 3-D pop?

I am really enjoying the 7Artisans 50mm F/0.95 lens this Easter. It's remarkably sharp wide open given good conditions. Here are 3 shots taken at apertures of F/0.95, F/1.4 and F/2.0 (no additional sharpening):

To my eye they all have good '3-D pop', but different in each shot. Which do you prefer?

I am glad you are enjoying your lens. Looks impressively sharp at F0.95 especially considering what this lens retails for.

3-D pop has no real definition and it will mean different things to different people.

In my personal (and biased) opinion 3D-pop is about realism, like you are standing right there. @F0.95 The bokeh is swirly and fantastic making it look more surreal than real, like a Monet painting. F1.4 looks best - with less swirlyness and doesn't have the harshness of F2 OOF rendering.

Personally i find a 24-35mm FL (FF equivalent) lends its self to more realism, as its more natural perspective closer to human FOV, but I am not claiming to know what 3D-pop means to others.

The only lens in μ4/3 with any true "3D" quality is the Panasonic Lumix G 12.5mm / F12.

I forgot about that lens , certainly one of the odder lenses in the system :-)
 
I think 3D pop has more to do with composition than any particular lens bokeh or DoF. The most 3D pop image I ever captured was with a point and shoot 1/1.7" sensor camera!

Yes 3d-pop is a very loose term. I guess I was meaning "leap out of the screen" in this case.

I also think the F/1.4 is the best compromise. However when sharpened the F/0.95 is impressive too.

What you are showing is a narrow DOF with a fast aperture lens.

I believe, as others have said, that 3D Pop is more about the subject coming towards you and leaving the screen - as you see when watching a 3D movie. Our eyes do not see a narrow DOF as they instantly adjust as you look about. The end result is that our brains see a very wide DOF.

For me, taking "3D Pop" photos involves a wide DOF with the right composition rather than what is produced by using a fast aperture lens. I have several photos that exhibit the 3D look from many lenses from my 9-18 Oly to a 70-300 Nikon.

On my screen, the birds in the photos below do look as if they are flying out of the screen towards you.

They were taken with the Olympus 9-18 at f6.3

Nice Photos! And I see what you mean about 3-D pop - they definitely spring out of the screen.

I guess I was talking about one specific variant, i.e. apparent 3D-pop due to foreground / background separation...

I’d go for f2. It has lots of separation, the resolution is better, and there is enough depth of field for the main subject to be well defined.

The image looks very flat to me, because there is a plane of isolated subjects set against a blurred background with no narrative structure.

I also prefer good high frequency resolution (micro contrast) so that the main subject details seem to jump out at you. This lens has an OK but sort of flat rendering.

3D pop seems to mean different things to different people, so that’s just my take.

I have this quite old photo of mine taken 10 years ago. It is also popping. Popping has to do with separation, contrast in colors, composition, and a lot of how the human mind and eye translates what we see.
