Hi

I was recommended a NiteCore flashlight for photography, but don't know if they are all flicker free. I'm looking for one that uses a single diode and has a good amount of light.

I was going to use it for frozen soap bubbles at night. Up until now I've been doing them when we get the occasional cold sunny day.

BTW it was actually Don Komarechka who recommended the brand to me, but I don't want to bug him again as he's busy with his wife helping out Ukraine refugees.

Thanks!

If you want Nitecore specifically, the SCL10 is a model made specifically as a camera light. It's not a traditional flashlight but is more of a video light with a hot shoe mount (though it doesn't need to be mounted on the camera). Light temperature can be adjusted easily and it can even be used as a charging device in a pinch. Runs about $90. There are a lot of similar lights for less money and they sometimes have extra features such as special effects (lightning, police lights, etc.), but they quality isn't always worth the savings.

I went with an Aputure AL-MW LED video light when I was looking for a non-strobing light source. It's more expensive than Nitecore's SCL10 and it works really well but is probably overkill for your stated purpose.

OK, oops this is my bad.

Don said to make sure it was one that used a single large diode.

My mistake for forgetting to add that. :(

I don’t know how helpful this will be but I’ve had a Nitecore MH25 flashlight since 2014 and I do use it for photography, mostly for nighttime photography of insects. I’ve found it to be an excellent flashlight and haven’t noticed any issues with flicker.

I have two nitecores and if I recall correctly, I have not had any issues with banding, flicker or other issues. Used mainly for frog and owls.

I can't recommend a specific light for you, but the term you want to avoid when looking at specs is "PWM", which is "Pulse Width Modulation" (lights that use PWM pulse when you dim them, instead of actually making the LED throw less light).
