I have not found any evaluations of smartmedia on the net. I've found common brands like Memorex, PNY, Samsung, and Sandisk. Have they been compared on the read and write basis? thanks for any leads

Woody Guthrie supposedly was asked when he was hospitalized which religion they should put down for him. "All of 'em," he said. Told that wasn't an acceptable answer, he said, "Well then, none of 'em".

Good approach to smartmedia. They don't have enough smarts to be differentiable. Short of a manufacturing defect, they all ought to perform interchangeably. So, find a cheap convenient source. I often buy from

where a 64MB is about $17 plus shipping. If you're willing to screw around with rebates, you may be able to beat that at Circuit City/ Fry's/ CompUSA/ whatever.

I have both Transcend & Scandisk. No real difference between them that I have noticed. Just go with which ever you get the best price.

It's basicly only memory chips in SM, the controllers in the device/camera/reader instead, vs. CF etc. where there's interface electronics in the card too, so one should be as good/fast as the next. Just don't buy one larger than the camera's control electronics can read -- check your manual, or better mfg's web site.
Supposedly they're all made by two factories (Samsung and Toshiba)
and they all perform the same (not so for CF by the way). I concur
that Newegg is excellent, but I've also gotten two generic cards
from Fry's and they work just the same.
