Shot in MOV, All-intra, "Orange and Teal" colour mode, with highlight "-3", Shadows "+3".

With all the crazy offering that the other major camera manufacturers are coming out with, Sigma Fp is definitely not your usual run of the mill camera. I am a videographer and my pointers below are from the videographer's perspective.

There are many drawback to this camera but it can all be overcome. The main reason that I bought this camera is because of it's colours. It has rich colours which draw audience to the footages that it produces.

Many cameras produce better image in a bright setting compared to a dark setting. But to my unscientific eyes, I very much prefer the image from Sigma Fp in a darker setting. Even in high ISO, the camera produces beautiful and clean footages.

Let's address some of the drawbacks of this camera and how we can overcome it:

1. Poor footage quality if you are recording outside of CineDNG (raw)

I would say that footage quality is not as good when you compare it to Sony & Blackmagic, especially if you are shooting outside of CineDNG (raw). However with some tweaks in setting and exposure you can still get good decent usable footage with MOV codec, both all-intra & GOP.

I notice that sigma does 2 thing to the footage when using MOV codec. It increases the contrast and sharps the image by a lot. As such you can use the "TONE" function to create a flatter image. I lower my highlights to "-3" and increase my shadows to "+2"

When exposing for your shots, always expose for highlights if possible. The camera can capture more details in shadows, thus its always easier to raise shadows in post. This should be the default exposure for most of your shots.

During post production, it's always good to "unsharpen" your footage by abit if its possible. adding a diffusion filter such as Tiffen Black Pro Mist Filter will also enhance the footage further.

Alternatively, just shoot CineDNG (raw) if you don't mind the huge file size and shooting with a SSD.

2. Lack of "In Body Image stabilization"

I shot the above video handheld using a short neck strap to create a 2 point contact and stabilised the shots. You can always use a neck strap, shoulder rig, chest mount, monopod, tripod, gimbal to overcome the lack of IBIS.

In Sigma defence, I don't find any issue with the menu and I find that the battery life is quite decent. Given the size and weight, I would say it performs well and punch above its weight.

All in all, if you love the colours and footage that the Sigma Fp is producing and you are willing to work around the above mentioned issues, Sigma Fp can be a very useful cam for you. Given its size and low light capability, its a camera that I would chuck it inside my bag everywhere I go.

I've noticed the color advantage with my fp L stills. I bought the camera for stills and for Sigma Color Tech. Even with JPGs directly out of the camera the images have punch and vitality that I don't often see from other cameras.

I'm glad to know you get the same in videos.

I’ve been quit impressed with the mov video on my fpL.

Ive only done short clips. I already had a compatible ssd, but I don’t shoot raw because my imac can’t cope with the load. I’m primarily a stills shooter, but I’m always interested in learning about video. I recently bought the 40mm f1.4 Art. Holy cow it’s sharp ! Now I might just Chuck it on a tripod and shoot some video.

Greetings LeicaRcine

All I know about video is what my 17 year old son tells me. I'm a boomer with a 17 year old son. I got married very late in life and didn't expect to have kids, but with that said I use the FP for stills only at this time.

Well let see how you compare to my son.

He say not that many drawbacks, but some and they are easy to overcome.

He agrees with you 120%

There again you two are in agreement.

On this he says he only uses DNG Raw? and converts using BlackMagic?

He uses a 1000 gb harddrive with a Roku mic. and a cage.

He uses a Big Tripod with a fluid head? His lens has OS built in and the 45mm is small enough to hand hold.

He has 3 batteries and a dummy battery.

Using the FP he won the Skills USA in our state and placed 5th over all in the Nation. He also used other cameras but found they didn't have what worked for him, and Sigma was the only company, the only company, that wanted to help a 17 year old succeed. He talked with the rep and Sigma USA a lot, they helped him so much to succeed, to reach his goals. The other companies just wanted him to go away or buy something that cost 5 times more or they didn't have the time for a 17 year old, bad move on their part. He will remember what Sony and Panasonic said to him. He was give a scholarship to one of the best video production colleges in our area, it's rated 5th in the world.

The new firmware update is coming out soon so we'll see what it offers. His setup is 2 FP's with the EVF, 45mm, and the 24-70 f2.8 grips and cages. The whole set up cost 1/2 of what just the camera would have cost from other companies.

I know zero about video, but I do listen to what he says and why. Why he prefers and how excellent the FP is and how you can pull Raw stills from the video files of the FP at full res.

We're going on the road for 10 days to film snowboarders

Good Luck be safe

Hello Roger,

Seems like your kid is very talented. Please feel free to share his work, I am keen to see his style of videography.

Good to hear that Sigma is a caring company. Sometimes smaller companies are more willing to help people out.

Good luck in your snowboarder project. It sounds fun! Do share some footage with us after your shoot.

Take care and stay safe.

Hi Roger-- Thanks for this post! I'm also a boomer and considering getting the Sigma fp, but would love to work with a tutor; reading about your very capable and talented son, I found myself wondering if I might be able to hire him to help me get started? This is my first post on DPReview.

Many thanks,

Kerry

Hi Kerry

Just read your post and I'll pass your idea on to him today. He has Spring break in a few days so I'm sure he'd be glad to help.

Have fun
