A7IV "Leather Case"

Once upon a time it was common for some people to have a leather case on their SLR. Often came in two pieces, one which stayed on the body, and one which enclosed the lens and the top of the body when the camera was not in use.

DSLRs have a lot more controls and sockets and card slots and stuff - these cases had to have more and more holes in them to allow access to all that. You can see how little of the body can be wrapped in leather now.

so, I’d say “no point, other than showing you are determined to maintain a stylistic link to the past” (which raises the question: why aren’t you shooting Leica? ;-)

I have been using these half-cases on my Sony cameras for a number of years and really like them.

I have large hands and the added height from the case makes the cameras much more comfortable to hold... plus my grip is more secure. I also like the added protection provided.

I also use the LIM's half cases which have a built-in Arca Swiss plate, which is really convenient when I want to use a monopod or tripod.

I have the Sony leather case for my RX100 VII and it mimincs those old SLR cases you mentioned.

It clips on at the bottom, wraps up front over the lens, over the top and down the back (protecting the screen which you can’t recerse) and cippling onto the bottom again.

When using the camera you remove the front of the case entirely or just let it dangle and you can get at all the buttons and can tilt the screen. You only put the front of the case on when you power down the camera and the lens retracts. With the front removed it resembles the A7 IV case we are discussing here.

It’s very useful and is a great way to carry the camera.

If this case for the A7 IV had a similar front section designed to be used with a small lens like my 40mm G, I might have considered it for when I just want to walk around with that combination. You would not have to take a seperate bag to store the camera when you were not using it if you have such an “old fashioned” case.

Mmmm, that’s the other catch - we have so many lenses available today that I don’t think they even try to make the other half for ILC bodies.

I am trying to remember how it worked decades back - I think the other half might have been sized to the kit lens, but it has been a very long time since I owned a camera with one of these cases. They were handy, back then.

The old Everready cases as they were called could occasionally be purchased with a longer “snout” front cover if you see what I mean for longer lenses.

This thread piqued my interest so I had a quick look around and there are some for some of the older cameras with a 28-70 kit lens. They don’t look that good to me with too many gaps so you can get at the various hinged flaps on the camera for things like the microphone socket.

do you need to removed when you want to mount it on a tripod? looks nice

No , you do not need to remove them for tripod use or change battery.

They all come with brass threaded ( male to female ) screw or have aluminium base very often with kind of Arca-Swiss plate.

They all improve ergonomics + look/smell ( I only use the real leather ) great.

I have them for my :

Pentax MX-1

Pentax Q

Nikon Zfc ( 1x SmallRig + 1x TP )

Sony α7III

Sony α7IV

just purchased one for Fuji X100V - on its way to me ,

and possibly will get one for my Fuji X-T4

Gariz cases are really well made, have access to the battery compartment without removing the case, and a mount point for a tripod (not that I use tripods much). I've bought and used them on pretty much any camera I have. Love the look of it on the camera, and the way it feels while holding the camera.
